Nets tried to get Marion

We're told the Nets tried to get into the bidding for Shawn Marion early in the game, and it was not a sign-and-trade scenario, either. They found a way to clear the decks by moving three contracts that added up to about $6-7 million, and use that as a jumpoff for a deal that would be slightly higher than what Shawn's getting in Dallas. Not interested, he said.

i honeslty dont beleive that story - we arent spending any money. the only ar of the story i remotely beleive is that we could have made moves to clear additional cap space. i wouldnt be surprise to see thse deals made by themselevs with no additional signings.

I did read a few articles during the season that we planned on looking at Marion this summer which is why I believe the story. I honestly don't think the Nets plan on "signing a max FA next summer outright. We would be able to get Marion this summer and still be under the cap next summer to do a S&T to get a legit guy to play with him. It makes sense if he was interested, but we're in cost saving mode. I think the fact we didn't push hard indicates that "yeah if Marion played ball in negotiations for us, then yes we'd love to have him. But if he didn't, no skin off our back." They did say in the article that we had plans to shed 6-7 million from our cap to sign him, which means he wouldn't have cost us any more money this summer than our current roster.

Why the hell would you want to get marion if you just traded your team captain to save money?
It is a B.S article!

He's be cheaper, a big time FA would still want to play with a core of Harris/Marion/Lopez with a decent young bench.

All I have to say to this is yuck, but again, I agree with Prelude, there was probably some truth to this, Rod has talked about Marion for years now, seems to be one of his favorites.
