Nets Focusing on Defense :)

The balls were bouncing and people yelling inside the Nets’ newly coined PNY Center. Training camp started today with optimism and chips on everyone’s shoulder to prove that all those who picked 20-30 wins are wrong.

--------------------------------

Coach Lawrence Frank is so focused on it that he doesn’t even want to talk about the other end of the floor.

When do you start doing the offense?
“We’re not doing offense.”

Ever?
“No.”

In your life?
“No.”

Ever?
“We’re going to play some defense. We’re playing defense.”

So you’re going to….?
“Defense. Score off your defense.”

Playoffs here we come; that's right I said it.

Once again Frank talking more then thinking.

I like the Frank year mantra of Defense. Though I am not totally against on focusing on D, but how long will this go on. These guys also need to get comfortable with each other on Offense. They need the transition away from that Dribble Drive BS from last year. Lopez needs to work on passing out of the post, Yi needs to work on his post moves, Harris/Lee/CDR/Twill/Hayes need to work with Lopez on re-posts and cuts to the basket, and I COULD GO ON AND ON. Yeah Frank wants to work on Defense and getting points from DEFENDING but there is more this team can do.

Unlike the old Nets team, This team has the potential to be a better half court team. Run and gun is going to work until teams stop that. FRANK is neglecting the half court. This is going to lead to a 15-15 start after 30 games.

This team is going to be better then what people think. This team has the make up of the 2001-02 Nets team. Remember that team wasnt an offensive team. It was all about Defense and fast break points. The one thing this team has that that team didnt, this team is a better half court offensive team. Will they win 52 games? I dont think so.

Harris = Kidd
Lee = Kittles
Twill = K-Marts heart and Defense without the blocks
Yi = Potential to be a better KVH
Lopez = better then MacCulloch
CDR = RJ rookie year
Bench Now = Bench Then

If Harris commits to D and gets his teammates involved, he is equivalent to Kidd.
If Lee does what I think he can, play D, run the floor, finish at the basket and hit open jumpers, we have a Kittles.
If Yi can average 12pts 6rbs, I can see a KVH comparison here.
Lopez is better then MacCulloch and Collins.
Twill though he isnt playing the Position and going to bring the same stats, but IMO he fills what the Nets have lacked over the years, Heart. IMO Twill will be our K-Mart.
Hopefully CDR can produce what RJ did in his rookie year, 9pts 3 rbs. I think he may do more.

Back to what you are saying Rev, If this team could be 15-15 that means at that point there are atleast over 5 games that were lost because of Frank. That is what happens every year. Frank tries to implement something new and it takes 30 games to get it right every year. The guy has no convictions. He is like Kerry, Flip Flop Frank.

There is no way in HELL Harris in his prime = Kidd in his prime. I repeat myself, NO WAY IN HELLLLLLLLLLL. Yi hasn't done crap yet, and most of the off-season talk is just hype. Given that, I still think we take the 8th seed. This season we will go as far as Yi takes us.

Good strategy. Raise the expectations of the team to an absurdly high level so that when they don't reach them, it is Frank's fault. And it seems you've already forgotten how good Kidd was.

I dont think there is a bigger Kidd fan on this board. I am not saying Harris is better then Kidd. I am saying that for the make up of the team Harris equals to Kidd. Harris isnt in his prime yet. So you dont know what he will be. Kidd and Harris are too different players. Kidd is a Pass First PG. Harris is a Scoring PG. I didnt say one is better then the other.
Kidd is a better Passer, rebounder, and court leader.
Harris is a better shooter, is quicker, and can score at will.

Just telling it like it is. Not really a Kidd fan boy, but your logic is pretty flawed. Harris doesn't have the leadership and heart that Kidd had in those days. Kidd was also a great defender, you forgot about all those steals that lead to easy fastbreak points?

You may say it is, but I stand by it.

Yeah Kidd was a great defender, but Harris was a very good defender in Dallas and is quicker then Kidd. Harris can be as good as a ball hawk as Kidd was. Most of Kidd's steals came from help defense too. Harris like RJ the year before disregarded defense when he was asked to produce more offensively. Their is more to this then being coincidence and player mentality. As for the heart, I dont know about that. The guy was banged up all last year and still made efforts to get back on the court.

I will repeat it - I will never say Harris is better then Kidd, because RIGHT now KIDD is a HOFer. Second, they are two different players.

For my theory, though different types of players Harris like Kidd did. He will fit where he needs to and this team will benefit from it. Harris wont be needed to rebound 6+rbs a game. Harris is more then capable of putting up 9+ asts per game. As for scoring, he is a better shooter and scorer then Kidd.

yeeeeeah this might be a bit of a stretch. i like the players on the team as well, but this is nothing like 01-02. who on this years roster is comparable to martin running the floor? or jefferson? yi is just as bad as van horn. kidd is a god to the nets franchise, unless they sign chris paul they will never have a point guard like him for quite some time. lopez is a giant improvement over mccolough. and id also take lee over kittles. but the big three from 2001 reach far and beyond the 5 man starting lineup of this season. 8th seed is for sure within reach though.
