Re-Arranging the Nets

In an effort to consolidate resources, maximize our 2010 capspace and create a more FA-friendly environment, I created a 3-way trade with the Grizzlies and Suns on the Trades and Transactions forum. I received mixed reviews from both MEM and PHX posters, but I wanted to get more feedback from the Nets fanbase.

Essentially, we would trade

CDR, Lee, Najera, Yi, Devin, our '10 1st (UN-protected) and Dallas' '10 1st

for

OJ Mayo, Amar'e Stoudemire and Louis Amundson

We pay a steep price for what we get iMO, but I think the deal is worthwhile. For one, the deal is at least salary-neutral for 2010, once you account for the cap holds of DAL's 1st and our own. I believe OJ and Devin are similar in terms of value (although I feel OJ would be a better fit alongside T-Will), so we basically trade Lee, CDR, Yi, a lotto 1st and a mid-1st for Amar'e, AND dump Najera in the process. Call me crazy, but I'd take that.

FWIW, Amundson is in there as filler to help balance rosters. Do you like this deal? If not, is the FORMAT something you would consider? We gut alot of our depth with this deal, but I think a lineup of

Mayo - Williams - ???????? - Stoudemire - Lopez
Dooling - ???????? - ???????? - ???????? - ????????

is better than

Harris - Williams - ???????? - Favors - Lopez
Dooling - Lee - Roberts - Jianlian - ????????

We can fill in the question marks later, whaddya say?

I say yeah why not if we have enough to still sign Lebron/Wade. We could go over the cap to keep Amare becuase we own his Bird Rights so yeah I'd do it. I don't really like Mayo at the point but I'd live with it. Our bench would be weak unless we could find veterans looking for a championship on the cheap.

If you take out our pick or put some kind of protection on it, it seems bout right.

why would we trade away all of that when we can just try and sign Amare in the offseason?

You know amk482 is right.

Amar'e is going to sign a max extension. We don't have room to sign LeTravalier AND Amar'e, unless we do a deal like this to streamline salary.

If I'm trading Harris and a pick almost certain to be top 5 in the draft (let alone Lee, Yi, CDR and the Dallas pick as well), I'm expecting a top 10 player coming back. Amare is not that and a risk to bolt.

James
Bryant
Wade
Howard
Paul
Bosh
Nowitzki
Nash

That's 8. Depending on who you ask, Pau may go in there as well, but I see no reason not to consider Amar'e a top-10 player in the league right now. The Old Guard, guys like Duncan, Garnett, the O'neals, Pierce, Billups, Carter, McGrady, Redd and Ming, are all showing their age or are out injured. I don't think big scorers like Melo, K-Mart and Arenas affect the outcome of games the way that STAT does, so I'd put them behind him.

A top-10 player is gonna cost. Remember the value DEN wanted in a Melo-RJ swap? It was outrageous. When you're fishing for a superstar, expect to pony up bigtime.

OK, but at least explain your rationale.

The feedback I've gotten from MEM and PHX fans is that we get an AMAZING deal here, while you and some other Nets fans feel WE are the ones getting fleeced. I think the truth is somewhere in between, but the entire reason I made this thread was to get a clearer view of what Nets fans like and dislike about this deal. It's your prerogative to deliver one-line witticisms on this board, but I'd rather your help me understand.

Let me break down the deal into components, and you tell me where and by how much you disagree. E.G., "another team would at least have to send a future 1st", or "no, we shouldn't have to sweeten the deal with ________".

Part I - Harris + Najera = Mayo + Amundson

Part II - Yi + CDR + Lee + DAL 1st + NJN 1st = Amar'e

I strongly disagree with you about Part 2 of the equation. Amare, with his health and contract issues just is not worth that package IMO.

OK, thanks; that's where I thought I might be losing Nets fans. I'll admit, I look at the group of PFs in the '10 lottery (Monteijunas, Favors, Henson, Davis etc.), I get the feeling we couldn't throw a rock into the Green Room without hitting a future All-Star. We'd be trading in a LOT of quality role-players and a possible future Amar'e, for a current one. I get it, but I hope you all can appreciate that what I outlined would be considered "market-value" to most non-Nets fans.

Is it safe to say, though, that Nets fans WOULD be open to trading Devin/Yi/Najera for capspace and a cheaper, younger lead guard (such as OJ Mayo)?

While I don't love Mayo, that's definitely a deal I can support.

The Amare part guts your depth (one of the advantages NJ has over a lot of these teams is that they have this room with 10 players under contract) and at that point you've also greatly jeopardized your flexibility if LeBron and Wade say no. Remember that there are cap holds for each player under 12 you are on the roster so the savings might not be quite as high as you're expecting.

Let's throw Lee, CDR, the Dallas pick and Yi out of the equation for a minute. Which group is more appealing for a LeBron or Wade:

Group A: Harris, a top 5 pick and cap room to add a $10 mil a year player
Group B: Amare and Mayo

Maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on depth, or am too down on Amare, but I think that's a tossup at best and that's before throwing Lee, CDR, the DAL pick and Yi into the equation.

I would support a Devin for Mayo deal, yes...

I dont like the idea of pairing Amare with Lopez
Plus I really don't wanna trade our top 5 pick this year

so, no

Not sure that Amare is the right type of PF next to Lopez.

To me, the PF on this team should be someone in the Haslem model... reliable rebounder, defender, can hit the open mid-range jumpshot... spread the floor for our talented low-post center.

Amare needs the ball a little too much... him and Lopez would be a crowded front line.

The scorer that this team needs should be a 2/3...

Amare sucks, I want no part of him. He's definitely not worth a max contract, and that little display against the Lakers last night further proves it. The man can't play a lick of defense, and his offense isn't even good anymore.

While I agree that a max contract is a bit steep for what he brings, and his defense has never been stellar, he was stopped on offense because Andrew Bynum is a freak. If he is a legit and full-time PF, guarded by PFs, I think he is effective. Of course, the experiment with Shaq disproves that to an extent, but I believe that's because Shaq's game made Amar'e into an all-the-time high-post and perimeter player, which doesn't suit his strengths. Brook can hit the mid-range, and knows how to make space for a slashing big like STAT to operate.

There is no excuse for going 2-15 when you are a "superstar" player, specially when your team needs you the most.

If he was willing to take something below the max I would entertain the thought, but that's highly doubtful, the man will get paid regardless, and I don't want him on our payroll with 100 million+ dollars.

And Bynum isn't all that great, he is just sorrounded by great players that get attention, allowing him to do his thing without much attention.
