The Heat are going to trade Chris Quinn to the Nets for a second rounder and cash, thus opening up a roster spot with which they can sign Alston. All very strange.

Maybe will keep Quinn as our 3rd pg in case of injuries to Devin or Dooling.The Nets weren't gonna play Skip anymore unless someone got hurt so it was only a matter of time until he asked for a trade and became a problem.

I got the real story (makes much more sense). Apparently Miami sends Quinn, 2nd Rounder in 2012 and cash to NJ for a TPE.

Makes sense now. Miami saves tax., NJN gets 2 round pick, money and Quinn.

He's making $1,050,387 this year and is an unrestricted free agent after this year.

Assuming there's no cash involved in this deal, NJ saves 300-400K (according to Dave D, Alston was bought out for $2.1 million when there was $3 mil left on the deal) and get a pick.

^ just over a million and expiring. He's an excellent fit at 3rd PG for what its worth (not much). He can shoot the ball from outside and play within his role.

He had $3.05 million coming to him for the remaining 49 games, and the Nets were able to convince Fegan to settle for roughly $2.1 million.

Based on that amount, I don't think there's an Alston trade that would have saved more money than simply buying him out. Plus the roster flexibility allowed us to get the pick (with Quinn) that a team was likely offering us for Rafer (if that much).

Cap wise..if I recall the contracts we most want to get rid is Najera...right?

Why wouldnt we use Alston to do that? As in...some team in need of a PG for the playoffs takes him for an expiring?

By taking back a second...doesnt this hurt cap room? Wouldnt the open spot be worth a cap hold of 5ook vs closer to a mil for the 2nd rounder?

Seems to me...ditto for the Dallas pick. Would see to make sense...and please correct me if i am wrong...that we look to move that pick as well. Obviously Yi is going no where...and our pick is going to be closer to 1st...so that's less cap room than planned.

Something has to be trimmed. Not sure how Alston who was expriring anyway made sense to be used in this way. It seemed to me that he was one of our most tradeable assets for a team in the stretch run.

I still stand by what I've been saying before the Nets won't make a big splash in free agency once they fail to land the likes of Lebron / Wade.

I think they're going to carry forward by building through the draft and then try to use their cap space to acquire a star or potential star (or even more draft picks) by making trades with other teams that are in financial distress.

This is what I like to hear. I think this is their plan too. Lebron and Wade says No to NJ. Then let the dominoes fall for teams that cant afford star players.

Yeh until a FA comes out and expresses directly they want to come here...I'm setting myself up for a big 2010 disappointement and long and slow rebuild...
