If a lot of things happen...

So let's say we don't get the #1 overall pick and John Wall.
Let's say Gilbert Arenas isn't traded this season.
Would you trade Harris and Najera and some cap space for Arenas?

You know, maybe he will become a FA target this offseason. He might have his contract voided and if that happens, I doubt he costs nearly the max.

If Arenas deal were shorter I'd think about it, but he still has 4 more years on that ugly ass contract.

What if he were a FA?
Would you go after him and try and trade Devin for maybe Gay, or in a 3 team deal for Milsap?

Why not. Arenas is only a year older and is a lot better than Harris. If we could deal Harris for Gay or any other wingman I'd be ok with going after Arenas.

EDIT: BUT.. only if we don't land the #1 pick.

Yeah, it obviously makes no sense to go after him if we got Wall.

No. I wouldn't touch Arenas, even before all of this happened.

Agreed.
I'm not big on his recent actions, but he is one of my favorite players in the league for good reason.

And? I would trade Harris for the right player in a second...but Arenas is not that player in my mind. 05/06 Gilbert Arenas would be a different story, but this isn't 05/06 Gilber Arenas. A starting line up of Arenas, Lee, CDR (Whoever we would get in the draft), Yi and Lopez is nowhere even near championship contender, especially considering we would have to resign YI and Lopez the next two years after that. We would be stuck in mediocrity until it was time to rebuild, which as we all know is the worst place to be in the NBA.

I guess, technically, there would be room for someone like Boozer/Gay/David Lee, but I don't see any of them putting us into contention. You might see differently, though.

You fail to see our point. We would go after Arenas only if his current contract was voided AND if we were able to sign a big free agent. Let's say wade, bosh and Wade all stay with their current team. That leaves Johnson, Boozer, Gay, Allen, Stoudamire, maybe Dirk and Joe Alexander as the top tier FA's.

We draft Derrick favors or whoever, sign Johnson, Trade Harris for Gay and sign Arenas. the team would look like this:

Lopez
Favors/Yi
Gay
Johnson
Arenas

Not a bad team at all..

The voided contract part was added as another hypothetical, not in the original point. So no, I did not "fail to see your point." I said there would be enough room for Lee/Boozer/Gay, didn't I? And, plus, if he were to get his contract voided, it probably will not happen until after the summer, in all likelihood.

So in your hypothetical, Arenas is going to sign for about an MLE contract? Because, even with his legal issues, I doubt a contender won't be willing to use their full MLE on him. Let's work it out to see what the Nets cap room will look like after signing Johnson, who will probably make around 14 million (though its hard to say what he'll get). Let's say the cap falls to 55 million, that leaves 41 million after Johnson is signed. Let's say Gay makes 10 million, just a million more than Harris, which is a lowball estimate. That leaves 31 million. Now, the Nets will have around 14/15 million already on the books, leaving 15 million. A 5 million caphold for both picks (of course, that could go up or down), leaving 10 million. We'll need to fill out the bench, so let's give 2 or 3 million to that, leaving 7 or 8 million. Personally, I'd rather use that cap space and package Lee and Terrence Williams for an upgrade other than Arenas, but that's just me. Unfortunately, however, since we've traded away Harris and might not have picked up a point guard with the Mavs pick, that upgrade will have to be a point.

PG- Traded player/Dooling
SG- Johnson/Dooling
SF- Gay/CDR
PF- Favors/Yi
C- Lopez/Yi/Favors

Personally, I'd rather keep Harris and the extra cap room after signing Johnson, and waiting until the deadline to see what we can get. If not, take on a bad contract that expires in 2012, and use that at the next deadline to upgrade the team.

EDIT: I added Harris' total to the already on the books number, so that caproom will probably have five or six million more, meaning we might be able to flat out sign a deeper bench.

I think you did miss my point since it wouldn't make any sense signing Arenas if we plan on sticking with the current roster.

As for Gay:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Rudy Gay didn't get his contract extension from the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, but to hear him tell it, he's fine with that. The Grizzlies and Gay had until midnight on Monday to hammer out an extension but didn't do so.

As it is, Gay will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

"We just didn't agree upon it," Gay said after the Grizzlies' 126-117 overtime loss to the Kings. "That's all it was. It's a business."

Gay told Fanhouse on Sunday that he thought he should be paid in the vicinity of $10 million per year for five years.

Obviously, Memphis never made such an offer. Still, Gay said not getting the extension doesn't change his long-term thinking about playing for the Grizzlies.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/11/03/no-e ... zlies-gay/

So yeah I think 10 mil for Gay is about right.

As for Arenas, he probably would get a deal higher than the MLE, I'm just banking on the whole gun situation to scare teams off. Pipe dream but who cares..

Right now I'm praying for Wall. After we hopefully land him, trade Harris for a young smooth shooting 2 guard or another lottery pick where we could land (Henry or Warren), and then sign Gay for 10mil and D. Lee for 12mil and run with that team next year. We would still have a few million for a vet backup PG/C for our bench

Wall
Harris or whoever (We need a 3 pt. shooter here)
Gay
D. Lee
Lopez

Bench
YI, CDR, T.WILL, C.Lee, Dallas Pick (either a PG or C)

I'm not a big D.Lee fan but i'd rather pay him over Boozer.I wouldn't mind paying Joe Johnson either since i've watched him enough to no he's worth the money.I hear alot of good things about Rudy Gay arnd here but i haven't seen him play enough to say that i want him on this team.

O yea and hell no to Arenas.I still can't believe he got that contract. We need a pg on this team that can pass the F'n ball.

I am not the biggest fan of Harris and fragile ways....but...I want no part of Arenas even if he were free.

He is a LOSER. A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I ma not commenting on his off court issues or bad judgement. I am talking on the court...he has fallen the depths of many other bvig stat producing guys that are over rated and the CAUSE for his team's barfness. Arenas is a MAJOR LOSING BALL PLAYER. NO THANKS.
