Mid-season Report Card On Yi

NBA is at its mid season. What grade do you give Yi?

I'm giving him a D +

13.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg
41.5% FG, 37.5% 3-point

He reminds me of Channing Frye's days with the Knicks and Blazers.

C+

I never thought I'd say this but Frye could never defend as well as Yi can...

C, but if he continues to play the way he is...then it's a D to F.

This is why I was saying in a previous topic that it was premature to say that Yi was going to be a great NBA player. It was looking like Yi could have become a consistent player when Del Harris was hired, since Yi's his boy. Too bad Del Harris quit.

How can he be given a C, or even worse, a C+?!
He is being thoroughly outplayed by Kris Humphries people, Kris freakin' Humphries!

F

yall were on his nuts when he came back from injuries, and i told ya'll i still didn't believe it would last that it was just a short stint of fool's gold

he's sucked before, he sucks now, and he will always suck at basketball(had to insert basketball before anyone inserts a homosexual joke)

(B-) the first 4 games before getting injured.

(B+) the 1st 2 weeks after the injury

(F) ever since

(D) For the season I guess... But, I really don't want him OR Courtney Lee to be our starters next year.

A, unless you consider playing defense and being a team player who passes the ball part of the criteria.

This thread is not about your boy Doug Funnie it's about Yi Jianlian.

What you grade Yi all depends on what you're expecting from him. Relatively speaking I don't think there's a single person who should be saying that Yi has not exceeded their pre-season expectations this season.

That's not to say that his play is perfect or that there isn't room for improvement but really... What did you expect?

I still think Yi is the Frye type of player.
Maybe he needs a Nash-like point guard to revive his shots?
That being said, Devin Harris sucks a$$.

They're similar in that they're both big men who can hit the three-point shot, but they have more differences than they do similarities...

For instance you're never going to see Frye try and put the ball on the floor and attempt to drive by someone even in New York he was too scared to attempt that... The same can not be said for Yi...

As for Devin Harris, it's been discussed a number of times before so if you're interested in understanding what "his" problem has been this year then look through some of the longer threads on the first 1-2 pages...

is he the worst starting power forward in the NBA?
that fools gold stretch had alot of nets fans excited but it was short lived.

im trying to think of a worse starting power forward in the league and i can't think of one...., i mean at this point even if we traded the guy and i see it possible that he is included in a deal with harris but is it possible to even get anything in return for him if we trade him separately before the deadline OR after the draft?

i mean i really dont get it, hes athletic , talented has perfect size to be a great player
yet
he can't catch a basketball, misses everything around the basket, hell he misses everything on the floor, and its not like hes a good defender or rebounder....so whats he doing out on the court?

You know you suck when you're losing minutes to Kris Humphries, guys a great energy player but im sorry if you're getting outplayed by a guy with that level of talent, you should be ashamed of yourself.

/vent.

sorry you can merge this with the other yi thread if you so choose, but im really curious about what ya'll think we will do with him in the future?

Worse starting PF's:

Jared Jeffries (good defender but that's about it)
Taj Gibson (meh)
JJ Hickson (Spoonfed by lebron on 95% of his FGs)
Boris Diaw (this year)
Ryan Hollins (The worst player in the league IMO)

I was one of the few that had semi high hopes for Yi but he regressed in the assist department and that is a deal breaker for me. I dislike players with no court vision and Yi might just be one of the worse passers in the entire league. And I wouldn't mind it that much if the majority of his shots were good shots but he either takes a long 2 or drives and misses badly.

what i meant was, legit starters not someone just replacing a player b/c of injury

Ryan Hollins is a center though isn't he? and hes not really a starter i mean hes just replacing injuries.

Id take boris diaw over him EASYILY.

JJ hickson, well Yi is spoonfed by harris alot too, hes getting wide open jumpers and he misses dunks and layups.

TAJ GIBSON???? dude is NICE, he can easily score around the rim, has a solid mid range jumpshot, he can definitely rebound the ball, block some shots and has much better defense than Yi.

and Jared Jefferies right now is honestly balling more than Yi because atleast he brings it every night consistently on one end of the floor, and hes one of the most versatile defenders in the league.

Yi maybe alot more talented than most these guys, but it sure as hell doesn't translate to production on the court, and honestly thats the only thing that matters.

I cant figure Yi out...I dunno about the worst starting PF, but he's definitely in there right now...However, I do feel he needs to continue to start more games, and we'll see what happens by the end of the season...right now I'm back on the fence with him...I'm hoping he can turn it around and bring some sort of consistency...though sooner or later, he's going become known as a big man streak shooter, not worthy of starting minutes...

I really believe as others have said, this team and coaching combined with the losing has a lot to do with player's performances...While that definitely contributes to Yi, he looks like his shot is off mentally more than anything...he needs to concentrate better, cause that shot is there...

I'm still pulling for him to turn things around...

If we're speaking purely of on-court basketball impact and strictly committed starters, then yes, Yi is the worst. His D has improved, but his efficiency is downright horrid for a player with his size and athleticism. He looked good for a while when there was absolutely no one else available to play, and he was getting 35+ minutes per game. But if he were as good as his numbers in December, he wouldn't regress in efficiency when a player like Kris Humphries is added to the team.

Yi is still is a valuable commodity, but at this point, people want to see results. He HAS improved this season, but that is mostly a product of increased minutes. Yi was given about as clear a pathway to succeed as one can ask, and just hasn't quite delivered.

He is such a tease, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the team is contributing to him playing bad but I think it painfully obviuos that he is consistently inconsistent. Even I got suckered in again even after I said I wouldn't, but sometimes he makes it so hard. I think Thorn fell for Yi again too and I hope he will snap out of it before every other GM figures it out and we can't get crap for him. Harris and Yi need to go this offseason.

There are only 2 guys on this current roster that I want here next season Lopez and T.Will.

Everyone else can go

Is Yi playing tonight ?Anybody know?

I ask because he's on my fantasy team.

He's listed as questionable (if I had to guess he's not playing) and has played pretty poorly as of late, if I were you I'd bench him.

I'd also consider dropping him for someone else depending who's on your waiver wire... So with that being said who else is on your waiver wire?

I know he's playing worse but our league is pretty deep---16 teams and 16 players on each team. The best guy on the FA market is Pietrus currently so Yi is pretty solid in our league.
