Leafs trade for 2nd back, offer sheet?

As per Bob McKenzie on TSN. If we're preparing an offer sheet for an RFA, Kessel is the obvious answer. But giving a 1st, 2nd and 3rd is a bit harsh IMO. I love his game though and think he would be a big part of our future. Giving up a 1st that could be in the top 5 in a very deep draft could hurt us even more in the long run.

I would actually say Burke may be targetting Brandon Dubinsky. He traded back for the 2nd and maybe we can nab Dubinsky with a long term offer sheet worth a shade under the $3.01M bracket (compensation is just a 2nd rounder). He's the ideal second line center of which we may already have a few of though. Who knows? But honestly, I'm in need of some major Leafs action so I hope something happens and Burke isn't just trading a couple of picks for the a pick in the presumed deeper draft.

I'm misquoted on the brackets though (I'm not even sure where I saw that one), the 2nd round compensation is for offers as high as $2.6M.

Edit: Actually -

Confused now.

Is Kessel really worth giving up those picks for?

I'd rather keep the pick and see what we can get in the draft this year, then use the money in the FA crop next year.

Interesting, the Bruins close to the salary cap BUT they just signed former Leaf dman Wozniewski. I know he won't make much but still??

Something up?

^There's no way that they signed him to a one way deal, so he'll likely be in the minors and not counting against their cap.

I think Kessel is worth losing those picks. I see the first rounder being in the 8-12 range which hurts but that's the price you pay for proven and quality young players. Kessel is only 21, its not like we're skipping the rebuilding process and making short sighted moves by signing aging vets.

TSN/Dreger saying a Kessel deal is VERY, VERY close.
