I think we'd need to deal Kubina before we acquired an expensive goaltender. I'd love to get Giguere from Anaheim, but it may cost us 4.5-5 mil or so. If we traded Raycroft for a younger player or a draft pick, we'd save an additional 2 mil, making it a bit easier.
In order for us to begin building more of a complete team (depth up front, a great goaltender, etc) we'd need to break up the salary back on defense.
If we dealt Kubina's 5 mil contract away, along with Raycroft's 2 mil contract, we'd be in a better position. Say we recieved 3 mil in salary for Kubina (took the talent hit in the deal), and signed Giguere for 5 mil, our cap situation wouldn't be much different.
What can we get for McCabe and/or Kubina?

I've come up with this idea...
Toronto trades:
Pavel Kubina
Montreal trades:
Sergei Samsonov
....stay with me.
Why do we do it? We get a player 'capable' of being a legit winger next to Mats Sundin. Samsonov is an expiring contract, so if he doesn't work out, then fine...let him walk at the end of the year. We get rid of Kubina's long contract, save a bit of coin in the process and can fill the additional depth spot on our blueline with that extra money.
Why do they do it? They get rid of Samsonov, which is what they'd love to do. However, it get's a little more complicated. It's no secret that they may have to decide between Markov and Souray, two defenseman that'll equal close to 10 mil combined. They may lose one of them to free agency, and still need to fill that void left by a top defenseman. By trading Samsonov for Kubina, it'll cost them an additional 1.5 million in the tradoff. With that 1.5 million, they get rid of a headache, and still maintain a solid defensive core with Kubina and Souray/Markov.
Bare with me...it's 2 a.m and the idea popped into my head. It's worth considering anyways.

Samsonov was given the contract for a reason. He could potentially put up some points next to Sundin, and would be a good fit in a Kubina deal. If he doesn't work out, let him walk and we're free of Kubina's contract...it'd be worth considering. We're not going to get a package including picks and young prospects for Kubina, he isn't worth that much on the market because of that contract.

I'm actually good with that, also because it would open up more quality ice for the likes of Whyte, Colliacovo and potentially Stralman who would all move up on the depth chart. I also think Harrision is a depth defenceman and whatever happened to Kronwall, and Karl Pilar is back.
We have a lot of depth D that can be given a chance or we needto move some for some forward prospects- this franchise hs very little promising forwards in the system.
