Cap Likely to be 50 mil

Post#1 » by Crowned » Fri Jun 29, 2007 6:24 pm

Sources tell TSN that for the 2007-08 season, the salary cap will rise to a maximum of $50.3-million. That is a $6-million increase from this past season when the cap was set at $44-million.

Won't matter cos JFJ will probably waste it on some no-talents.

Jason Blake and Mikael Nylander.... :nonono: ....yau have to be freakin kidding me. If he adds these pantloads I'll be pissed. I'd rather save the money for a potential trade and let the yound guys play then give these losers big paydays. Better be a smoke screen.

Fergie should seriously explore the idea of dealing Kubina for chump change and look to really improve our roster up front and on the back end. That would give JFJ around 11-12 million to spend.

Here's my idea...

D Tom Preissing roughly 3yrs/6.5 million (2.2) or D Martin Skoula (great +/-)
LW Ryan Smyth 4yrs/26 million (6.25) (The grit)
LW Todd Bertuzzi 1yr/1 million + bonuses (Big Body in front)
C Mike Peca 1yr/1.25 million + games played bonuses (need the PK)

Bertuzzi/Sundin/Smyth
Tucker/Wellwood/Bell
Ponikarovsky/Antropov/Steen
Kilger/Peca/Stajan

Pohl/Deveraux

Kaberle/McCabe
Preissing/Colaiacovo
Gill/White

Belak

Toskala/Razor

I'd like to get Kariya for about 4.5 mil, and re-sign Peca for 1.5 or so.

Peca was likely my favourite Leaf last season when he played. He just brings so much to a team, you'd be crazy not to bring him back.

I like that idea.

If we were to deal Kubina for straight cap space, we'd have a pretty competetive team next season (assuming JFJ uses the cap). Let's say he signs Kariya for 5, Bertuzzi for 2, Peca for 1.5 and Hannan/Hamrlik/Boynton for 3-3.5 per. Hopefully the market doesn't drive up prices, because that's about what I'd pay for each.

We'd run a lineup of...

Bertuzzi - Sundin - Kariya
Tucker- Wellwood - Bell
Poni - Peca - Steen
Deveraux - Antropov - Kilger

McCabe - Kaberle
Hannan - Coliacovo
Gill - White
...and one of Stralman, Belak, Kronwall as the extra

Toskala
Raycroft

...when healthy, that's a dangerous lineup.

I don't know if Kariya likes those big market teams. I've heard he doesn't like the media spotlight.

Peca, although he was injured, his absence was EVIDENT the second half of last season. The PK was brutal down the stretch and turned out that that cost the Leafs a chance to make it to the playoffs.....that and Raycroft's unclutchness on the PK ;)

As for your lineup....no way Antropov is a 4th line center for 2 mill a year. I still see him as a good fit with Sundin and Bertuzzi....slow, but they sure can get it done down low. Also, I think TOR keeps Stajan and Kilger in the lineup over Pohl and Deveraux

Bertuzzi/Sundin/Antropov
Steen/??FA??/Poni
Tucker/Wellwood/Bell
Kilger/Peca/Stajan

I think that would be an outstanding forward group....if healthy.

lol, I forgot about Stajan. Though, if they were to go out and make a big splash with multiple players, a current Leaf would get the boot.

Well that is true and JFJ said he'd be active in trade talks....so I haven't a gut feeling he's gonna make a deal....maybe even before he signs someone.
