Tavares. But I"m not sure he'll be as great as everyone says
the guys who are great but slow(ish) are usually passers, with great vision and hockey sense and all that.
since his big talent is scoring goals, I'd feel better about him if he was a speed demon. I think he'll be deadly on powerplays anyways

Tavares is going to have to improve his skating at the next level for him to meet peoples expectations. I think they are going to be two totally different players, Stamkos being the better 5 on 5 player, giving you good defensive play and about 35-40goals in his prime. Tavares on the other hand will make his living on the Powerplay and could very well score 50 goals in his prime. Tavares reminds me alot of Spezza in junior where he was so dominant even though he wasnt that great of a skater, but Spezza has proven that you can improve this skill with the right training.

I was thinking of the same comparison. The skating issue worries me though. For that reason I would choose Stamkos over Tavares.
And I would hope that he would make some improvement in that regard before the draft next year. Though as I remember Spezza really didn't make his improvements until turning pro? Do you remember it that way also?

Ya its a hard decision because I think your also getting alot of leadership qualities in Stamkos and is a guy you could have captain the Leafs for many years down the road. Stamkos skating is what Ive been most impressed with , he looks like a Mike Modano clone when skating with the puck in the neutral zone. I guess id just gamble on the great potential of Tavares and hope he develops well, but Stamkos is the safer pick imo.
Yep even in his first few seasons Spezza's skating was a hinderance to his performance. It was last season that I started to see the big improvement he made with it. He looks even quicker this year and one of the best players when healthy (I think he averages more points per game then anyone in the league).

No no, it hasn't changed. I knew they were in different draft classes; I simply wanted to know who the majority would choose as the cornerstone of their franchise.
We should tank this season, and next, picking up as many "cornerstone pieces" as possible moving forward. Hopefully, Justin Pogge will pan out as expected and be the franchise goaltender we need; Toskala's great and all, but he's already 30.

Did anyone see the prospect game earlier this week? Stamkos is a complete player- scores, passes, hits, leadership and he even dropped the gloves in that game. I say trade the whole freakin team so we finish at or near the bottom for a few years, get Stamkos this year and either of Tavares or Hedman next year. I would get as many picks as I could for the next few years as the draft classes are deep and we need to rebuild our entire system with prospects.

If they do anything else someone needs to be fired and I know who? So do you ... I am sure!
