Kaberle refuses to waive no trade clause

Post#1 » by Crowned » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:14 pm

''Tomas Kaberle is not going anywhere,'' agent Rick Curran told TSN. ''He signed a contract to be a Toronto Maple Leaf and while he's disappointed with the way things have turned out this season in Toronto, he has no intention of leaving

''I don't know how much clearer I can be on this. I talked to Tomas two weeks ago and he told me he's not going to waive his no-trade. I talked to Tomas two days days ago and he said then he hasn't changed his mind. I talked to him this morning and it's still the same thing - he's not moving. He likes Toronto, he likes the Maple Leafs and he wants to be a part of the team getting better. Players have no-trade clauses for a reason and Tomas doesn't want to be traded. It's really that simple. It's just not happening.''

Who didn't see all these guys excercising their no-trade clauses and us being stuck with all of them. Although, Kaberle remains one of the guys I'd hate to see go.

If they don't make sgnificant changes by the trade deadline, I hope some of these overpriced guys who think the Leafs are their retirement home get sent down to the Marlies.

Time to call up the young guys and let them get their feet wet in the big league.

Do you know what though if the Leafs dont make the playoffs this year theres a clause on his contract where it says if the leafs dont make the playoffs this upcoming season he lose's the NTC at the end of the season and can be traded wherever management choose's. Kaberle very well could be traded at the draft to either improve our first pick or to aquire a package of young players and picks.

I was aware of it and I love it. If the Leaf fans at the ACC were in the least bit representative of the Leaf Nation they would boo the H out of Kaberle. If Kaberle loved the Leafs so much he could have blocked a shot or two this year. There is not a softer guy on D on this team. He showed that for all to see as soon as McCabe was hurt. I cannot wait until the summer for him to be gone.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the no-trade clause. Someone on the radio said it's for NEXT off-season, not this summer, others have said it's this summer. If it is this summer, I agree with the school of thought that he might want to consider a deal now when he can exercise some control.

As for the guy himself, he's not a physical presence, but he's tremendously skilled and he is far from being the biggest problem on this team. I was at the Bruins game and he was far and away the best defenceman on the ice. I counted at least three times where he made excellent moves to keep the puck in on offence where if it gets by him there's big trouble.

Besides that, unlike most of the other guys with no-trades, he's not too old and his contract is reasonable. Unfortunately I get the feeling the will trade him simply because they can't trade the guys they really want to move and feel like they need to do SOMETHING.

Finally, don't blame the players for not waiving the no-trade clauses - they have every right not to. Blame the wonderful Leafs organization for giving them out in the first place.

I am sorry, but you are wrong about Kaberle. The guy has never blocked a shot in his life except by accident. His idea of checking his man is to give a little bimp and then release. When McCabe went down his weaknesses were amplified. I cannot see what another GM would see in him, except that they might have a defensive stud to pair up with him.

You don't trade guys like Kabrle imho he's a damn good defensemen a top 10 for sure maybe top 5. The guy is on a great contract and loves to play for the city. I understand that he could command alot but do you really want to start a trend of doing this kinda thing?

If a guy like Brain Campbell is going to get a deal that sees him making $25-$30 millilon over 5 years then I wouldn't move Kabrle

From the story:

Sources say some GMs were upset that Fletcher essentially completed a deal that would have sent defenceman Tomas Kaberle to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for centre Jeff Carter and a draft pick late Sunday.

It looks like Kabs is staying 'till 2010.

The reason some people want to trade him is because they'd like to see a all out rebuild and hes the one player who would bring back the kind of return that could greatly help you build a great new core. If this team did the right thing and commited to a 2-3 season rebuild where your draft picks and young players are receiving alot of quality icetime. Just look at how Chicago had developed there young defencemen, they pretty much gave them Seabrook and Keith top blueline minutes right off the bat and now there one of the best young 1-2 defence pair in the league. I could easily watch a season of McCabe, Stralman, Kubina, Coliacovo and our first rounder who will most likely be a defencemen.

Kaberle might be the better player but I think this season has shown some fans that McCabe is a valueble player to this team and the Leafs took a major dive in the standings once he got injured in Montreal. Id also rather have him around to mentor the young players in the next 1-2 years because hes been said to be a very good player in the dressing room and a good leader. Once some fans get over his pricetag they will realize thats he still a good player in this league.

The reason Kaberle could be traded is Fletcher likes what he could possibly get back more then the thought of keeping Kaberle around while the next few years could be rebuilding ones. There are alot of teams right now that could greatly do for a puck moving defencemen (Philly had a deal on the table and Kaberle nixed it, but I wouldnt be suprised if it was something like Jeff Carter, Claude Giroux and 2008 first rounder for Kaberle). Now trading Kaberle hurts in the near future, but does that return make us a better team in the longrun?

So lets just ignore the entire other side of his game (offence) and the fact that he's the creator of a huge percentage of the teams rushes and scoring plays. Never mind the fact that he's not nearly as bad as you make him out to be. Would you prefer to have a penalty-magnet pylon like Wonziewski on the blueline?

The ideal situation WOULD be to pair Kaberle with a defensive stud. Unfortunately the Leafs don't have one. McCabe certainly isn't one either, although I give him credit for being better in that area this year, at a huge cost to the offensive production for which he was signed to his insane contract. Even before the injuries, McCabe's offensive output was horrific by his standards and so it's a good thing Kaberle picked up some of the load.

In my opinion Kaberle will be traded sooner or later because the other defencemen (McCabe, Kubina) are unmovable. Not because he's really the guy that should be moved, or that they want to move.
