no. He's supposed to waive it because it's whats best for the team

he knows he's hurting the leafs by staying. He still chose to stay. Everything else is window-dressing

How do u know its best for them?

wanna tell me how Edmonton looks after letting go of there captain and heart of that team? They have a bunch of prospects none that are really elite and are a bottom feeder.

You fans can complain all you want about him not doing whats best for the team but its refreshing that theres a athlete in sports whos willing to stick with his team and go down with the ship. Does it hurt the team going forward? Possibly but its managements fault that they gave out certain clause's and hired crappy management, not Mats Sundin's fault.

Why is he supposed to do anything? Did they ever truly try and build a winner around him? They are the ones that gave him a no-trade clause, so they already had made the decision that no matter what they were willing to live with it. Sure they didn't expect to be this bad, but realistically - teams don't think the NTC all the way through.

Personally, if I was GM I'd set out the mandate to all agents that no player other than my fanchise player (such as Sundin) will receive a NTC and even then it will be taken very seriously before added to any contract.

Because fans think its his responsibilty to clean up the mess Peddie and Ferguson made.

hardly see this as some noble display of character

it's complacency. And nothing more than that. He's comfortable here and doesn't want the bother

No its more like he doesnt want to jump ship and win a championship that he wont feel 100% apart of but I guess its all the sudden his responsibilty to leave and clean up the mess that Peddie and Others have created right?

blame management if anything there the ones who put us in the position.

Well, he just officially ruled out a trade. I am a little disappointed b/c this was our best opportunity to "officially" pronounce a rebuild.

Would've been nice to enter this draft with two top 5 picks and a prospect like Ryan already in place in our system, but can't say I'm entirely surprised. All other considerations aside, Sundin has certainly earned the right to make this decision. Like many, I would have preferred a trade for what it could do for the team in the near future, but I respect him too much to criticize.

With that being said, it wouldn't feel right having Mats win a cup with any other team then the Leafs. So every one of the 5 players with NTC's said no. Other than Antropov and/or Steen we have zero tradeable assets. Those 2 probably shouldn't go anywhere anyways.

if that was actually true then I'd say his reasons for staying are far worse than complacency

he wants to stay because winning the Stanley Cup(the Stanley Cup! and his last and final shot at it) would 'feel funny'?

somehow, I doubt thats what this is about

Its called Loyalty.

Its quite obvious many people in this day and age forget what that is and certainly dont appreciate it.

who is he being loyal to exactly?

-management want to trade him for the good of the team
-fans want to trade him for the good of the team

so, who's he being loyal to here? the ticket vendors? the concession stand guys? the zamboni driver? who?

Hes being loyal to himself and what he wanted to do and thats obviously stay in Toronto. Didnt want to have to become a rental player to clean up the mess the highers up have made. Why should he make a decision that he doesnt want when hes earned that right over many many years of giving this team more then almost any player ever has. Not all fans wanted him traded and there was a big group who wanted him to stay so I wouldnt try to act like the whole fanbase wanted him gone.

not completely sure what that means but it's better than saying he's loyal to the leafs so I'm not going to argue

actually, I think I agree. It was completely about being loyal to himself

I would say the healthy majority did, especially after the media got after it, but either way, loyalty to the fans obviously had nothing to do with it.

Even his agent knew better than to try that line

ansoncarter, I don't understand your venom over this. I wanted Sundin traded as much as anyone, but at the end of the day he had every right to make the choice he made. He even said himself that if he was 29 instead of 37, he'd probably have gone, but at this point in his career he doesn't want to leave.

There was the quote about 'I'm not responsible for cleaning up JFJ's mess'. I'm not sure if he said it, but if he did, he's totally right! It's management's job to fix this mess, not his. If he waived the no-trade, it would have been best for the team, and so in that sense he was doing what's best for himself first. But he had that right. It's management that screwed up here, not Mats Sundin.

^and I don't understand everyone glossing over the heart of the issue with this mantra that it was managements fault

who cares? simple fact is, he knowingly refused to help the leafs becasue it was inconvenient

it's fine if that doesn't bother you, but at least stop praising him

Hey, you're absolutely right. He could have helped the Leafs, and he chose not to. My question is, why do you feel he is obligated to help them? And second to that, what's the point of having a no-trade clause if you're not supposed to use it?

I understand why the "I want him to be a Leaf forever, he's the franchise, blah, blah, blah, ..." over-the-top stuff is annoying you. It annoys me too, and has for years. That's part of Leaf Nation unfortunately, and we have to live with it.

I think he should feel obligated because it's only 15 games

no-trade clauses are fine. Gave mats security for years. But it's the final 15 games. Not asking for the moon here, imo
