I'd rather take the chance that someone who strikes out during the draft or free agency will take a flyer on Kubina through a trade.
Yup, people don't realize. McCabe, Kubina, Tucker; these guys have at least SOME value. We're not simply trying to dump em on the first taker. If it was McLaren for Kubina, I'd be expecting a prospect or a 1st rounder on top of McLaren. But that being said, Kubina will be dealt during a period in the summer when his NTC is not valid.
Fletcher made some very good deals at the deadline overall. Gill turned out having as much value as Huet somehow. A 2nd for MTL that will be about 10 picks higher than the one the Leafs got, plus the Leafs get a 5th. Kilger was a solid part of the club, but he always looked to be gone. Belak I did not expect to leave, but whatever, he wasn't playing a huge role anyways. I love his reaction to the deal, covering up his definite disappointment with humour, gotta love his character.
But Fletcher is not accepting this recent run of play as a reason not to re-build. He was hired to do something and that is what he will do. If we were making a run for the playoffs (which is still "mathematically" possible), JFJ would still be the GM, and perhaps one of Hossa/Richards/Marleau/Jokinen would be a Leaf. That is not the case.
