Uh oh, Kaberle's dad seems to be getting pretty pissed off with the situation. Seems like this was the last straw:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/08/ ... _on_trade/

"I think that during the course of the year he will be traded to another club," Kaberle said. "There is only one chance for Toronto to get something back in return for Tomas now. In my opinion, I can't see Tomas entering a new contract with Toronto. Not if Ron Wilson continues to be employed there."

So who asked Kaberle's father to do an interview; the Leafs, Kaberle or the Hockej?

Random sport politics.

Yep. There's a way to go about shopping a player and Burke did the absolutely opposite of what you have to do. He dragged Kaberle through the mud on this one and basically shot himself in the foot if Kaberle decides he's not waiving for anything and plays only for himself this year.

At times it seemed Burke was the only one who insisted on the 'strong' possibility of Kaberle staying.

As far as optics are concerned, Burke didn't drag Kaberle through the mud.

In the end, he should have moved Kaberle when July 1st hit. Teams had the cap space to offer prospects/picks for him and they wouldn't have taken much salary back. Now they're forced to take salary back and the demand for him is back into the gutter in comparison.

There are still teams that missed out on defensemen on July 1st, I wouldn't say the offers would've been that good for him at that time. I really did expect at least one or two good offers come August 15th.

guess Burke just found that out.
Now the Leafs go into next season with too many defencemen, not enough offensively-gifted defencemen and not enough offense to scare any team

I don't think there's such a thing as 'too much defense'.

Philadelphia begs to differ. They probably have the best defense in the entire NHL and it won't mean **** because they're useless in nets.

I suppose goalies would fall under defense, in that they don't fall under offense. We "should" have the goaltending to be competitive with the D corps that we have. the GG tandem should be much better than last year.

To me, goaltending should be a priority above all else. You can have the two best defenses going against each other, and the team with the less useless goaltender will win - see Chicago/Philadelphia. The complete opposite example would be Montreal, our defense is the ****s but our goaltending was amazing and kept us in it. It's sadly going to stay that way too until some contracts come off the books.
