I think this helps the Raptors...a bit less pressure on Masai to be the only winning game in town next year.

Won't mean the Leafs will be any better next year, but there will be enough excitement around them to take pressure off the Raps.

I'm a Red Wing fan and I care. We've outperformed the last couple of years. Our star players are getting old are new players aren't stars yet and we took Tampa Bay to 7. The money they pay him doesn't count against the cap - why would we care about what he makes.

But lets see who they get to replace him. Depending on who they get, it might be easier to swallow.

kinda reminds me of when they signed Burke. best guy available. Stanley Cup champ. HOF pedigree. soon to realize makes no difference if the team sucks = Babcock thrown under the bus. lather rinse repeat .

You're wrong for a bunch of reasons. Whenever you have a chance to get the best coach and someone of his stature, you do it. Especially when the term or the money doesn't affects the cap. Great signing

jays board friend...it always makes sense to hire the one of the best coaches in any sport at any time. furthermore, his only other options were:

detroit - better currently than the leafs but datsyuk and zetterberg are past their primes. plus they were only offering 4 mil a year.
buffalo - coach a team that's just as bad as the leafs, in a worse city

why doesn't he take the most high-profile, highest paying job in the sport? and why wouldn't the leafs want the best coach (available or not) to turn this gong show around, without it going against the cap? there's zero downside to this signing.

Burke took the team to the only playoff appearence they've had in the last 10 or so years. He would've easily made the team better, but got fired because he was caught banging some chick or sumthin (i unno the story).

Good hire by leafs. Coach has much more impact in hockey.
