I don't think Svatos is the answer...
I feel pretty good about our defence and goal tending situation. Carlo is a second unit defenceman and his worth is more to the team than swapping him for Svatos...
Injuries can't be predicted on past seasons and I have a feeling that Carlo will play most of the season, with little games lost this year due to problems like he's had in the past...
The only trades I would make at this time would be minor and perhaps only using excess defencemen like Kronwall, Harrison or Wozniewski, even dealing them for cap space (re: draft picks) that could get a player like Peca or Yashin
Although we lack Right Wingers most forward players can play multiple positions and even thrive in doing so...
Unless we can obtain a player that is a proven high scoring Winger like Hejduk, I think we have the personnel to get us into the play-offs, how far we go is another matter...

To Toronto: Hejduk + Svatos
To Colorado: Kubina + Colaiacovo
Not official, and I don't know about the source... I guess we'll find out soon.
I'd stick this in the rumour section for now, if it becomes official then we make it's own thread

Well so would the Leafs but you see, teams don't give away stuff for nothing. Besides i don't think this is true

Agreed...
losing both our second unit defencemen would be crazy. Kubina I can see as the center player in a trade and perhaps Harrison and Stajan as throw ins and even add a third rounder in 2008...
I think something may be in the works but not as it is being reported. Eklund is saying that Islanders are thinking of signing Markov, maybe
(Nullifying a proposed trade for McCabe?)...

Danny Markov to the NY Islanders (e4).
Talking to sources it looks like the Isles may have found their man....I was told some time ago, that Comrie and Guerin were told that one of Markov, McCabe, Jovo, or Morris would be an Islander...If this happens I would expect Morris to go to Buffalo...looks like one will go to one, and one to the other....the only other team that I am hearing linked to Markov is Chicago....

Eklund has been buzzing the last few days about the Leafs/Habs/Sens all having interest in Marleau. With SJ in need of a top pairing d-man, we could put together an offer of Kubina/Steen for Marleau. Marleau would be a full time Sundin replacement, and with this trade, if we wanted to despite the glut at center, we could still get Peca with Marleau's $4M cap hit. SJ could team Steen with a young core of Bernier, Pavelski, Wishart and so on. OT: You guys should visit the Sportsnet Hockey Forums as well, I find them really useful since they have such a huge fan base.

I don't like the thoughts of giving up a signed top defenseman (Kubina) and a promising young forward (Steen) for Marleau, who will become a UFA after this season and could walk away leaving the Leafs with nothing, or demand a ludicrous amount of money giving the Leafs no wiggle room.

I would do it fast with a couple of conditions. SJ must include someone young or a pick and include a list of player's that would be added to the deal should Marleau walk away. The latter part really wouldn't be necessary as you wouldn't make the move until you had him signed to an extension.

It's being reported that Peca is seeking about half of what he earned last year, thats 1.25 million, half of 2.5 million he earned in 2006...
I for one, would have his signature on a contract right now and then worry about the cap. We have to deal a defenceman anyway because of the over abundance we have and dealing, one of Harrison, wozniewski or Kronwall should get us there...
Surely some team will give us a say a 3rd or 4th round draft choice for one of them?...

I'm all for bringing Peca back as you guys know. I don't know why everyone was getting upset on the fan yesterday. They'd rather have Stajan than Peca. Normally you guys know I'd take the young guy over the old guy but Stajan hasn't improved since his rookie year 4 years ago. It's getting to the point where you have to think this is as good as he's gonna get
Just something of note in regards to JFJ, he's having a tougher time than expected because his mother is sick too. I expect he's back working now, but this may be why they're looking for a mentor for him, to take some of the load off

Well I would much prefer to deal a defenceman rather than Stajan...
We have 10 D, that include 4 non rotation players, that are on 1 way contracts and can't be sent down to the minors because they are guaranteed. They are again Harrison, Wozniewski, Kronwall and Belak...
Belak can be used as a forward and is the enforcer so he will more than likely stay put but carrying 10 D is not a good situation and with our cap unwieldy and almost max'd out, something has got to give and if nothing in the wind in the Kubina trade rumours, one of the young D make the most sense as trade bait...
Yes, I too would like to extend condolences to JFJ, after losing his father and now his mother not being well, he is being hit with a double whammy and hopefully MLSE can get him some help...
