RUMOR: Leafs Talking Major Moves Soon

Take it for what you will, it's from Eklund, but I'm was intrigued greatly by this article.

In actuality, there are three deals on the table for the Leafs which will happen by the end of round 1 in the draft."

"The first one is a big and involves bringing a top 3 forward, a draft pick, and a VERY good, young goalie prospect for Tomas Kaberle and a prospect. The goalie and the draft pick will be part of a package that will be on the table on draft day, and it is THAT deal which could potentially re-shape the Toronto Maple Leafs."

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post ... ogger_id=1

So the countdown begins to draft day...what possible packages do you think are on the table potentially.

Teams that are noted in article include: Buffalo, New Jersey, Pittsburgh and Washington, the latter two being the teams in hot putsuit of course.

Trade 1: With Buffalo... Jason Pominville/2nd round pick/Jhonas Enroth for Kaberle/Hanson
Trade 2: With NJ... Travis Zajac/2nd Round Pick/Jeff Frazee for Kaberle/Hanson
Trade 3: With Pittburgh... Jordan Staal/2nd Round pick/Brad Theissen for Kaberle/Didomenico
Trade 4: With Washington... Alexander Semin/2nd round pick/Michal Neuvirth for Kaberle/Stalberg

just the deals I'm throwing around...I'm thinking it's Washington here.

I dont see why NJ would trade Zajac (there #1 center). They are already most likely going to be losing Kovalchuk, they simply cannot then trade away Zajac.

Theres no way the Pens do that deal. You wouldnt even get Jordan Staal straight up for Kaberle.

This is ecklund so I basically believe nothing he writes. I expect to be totally underwhelmed with what we get back for Kaberle. Guy has one year left on his contract and coming off a pretty bad season (horrible defensively, wasnt even killing penalties, looked lifeless for long stretchs).

Yeah I understand, I was just throwing out potential deals that could be made under those conditions. I doubt they will go down but who knows.

Somebody was talking to me and said what about the Leafs getting Malkin and trading Kaberle and Kadri. Kaberle would have to get an extension, but in the end, it may be the deal that makes the most sense out of all that I posted..lol.

This allows the Pens to move Staal up to the 2nd line, while getting a PP QB in Kabs and a potential young center in Kadri who can play the 3rd line for the time being in PITT.

I'm not saying it's going down, but it's fun to speculate.

The more and more I think about it, the more and more I'll probably be disappointed, so I'll stop ranting.

I could see a Maxim Talbot/Kaberle deal happen...I believe we were interested in him before...

That makes no sense at all, actually.

And seeing as Atlanta offered Kovalchuk & Armstrong for Malkin and the Pens said no, there's no way in hell you'd even get Staal with Kaberle. Only deal with Malkin is one that brings back an absolute stud winger for Sidney. Would have to be something along the lines of Parise, Heatley, etc.

When Ek spews his BS about the deal being a prospect goaltender, top 3 forward and pick, I see it being Cory Schneider, Burrows and a 2nd or something along those lines. Which honestly wouldn't be a bad return, but I still think the Leafs should clear out the glut of mediocre goaltending they already have before making a move for another one.

^If we're in Montreal, it's called depth, if we're in Toronto, it's called a glut. At least give our young goalies a chance, we haven't even seen what guys like Scrivens and Rynnas have to offer yet you right them off :-?

cant wait to see who Brian Burke gets us this Off-season

if talks with Kulemin dont improve, him + Kaberle could net us something pretty good

Okay, so what have Rynnas, Scrivens, Giggy and THE MONSTER done in Toronto that Price and Halak haven't done in Montreal? I'd say it's a pretty solid argument to say it's depth vs glut at this point.

Seems a bit quick to judge, don't you think? And what could have any goalie done in Toronto the last few years? After the trade deadline, I'd say it's an easy argument that goaltending was our strongest position.

And what has Carey Price done lately? Everyone in Montreal is afraid of trading him b/c of the Roy trade but it was Halak who carried your team in the playoffs this year. I'm not trying to argue that Price doesn't have value or isn't good, but are you going to base your argument on what Price has done in the (somewhat distant) past and not the Leafs' goaltenders? Just seems biased.

Halak played out of his mind for a few months after a few years of Jose Theodore-esque inconsistency. He's already 25 and not going to get any better and probably has more value on the market than Carey does, plus he wants more money. If it was my choice I'd move Halak and sign Price long term and tell the moronic Montreal fans to suck it up if they want to boo like ***holes.

Price won a series in Boston and then had a mental breakdown in round 2 against Philly at what? 20-21 years old? I say give him a break, the kid is going to be one of the best goaltenders in the world in a few years.

Heard of Patrick Sharpe for Kaberle on fan, nothing of substance, just a discussion.

Hawks really dont need Kaberle with Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjarmlsson.

Leafs are interested in Sharp according to rumours tho.

I hope we land Semin.. Out of all those deals, that's the deal that really stands out to me. We already have the 30 goal scorer in Kessel. We could always use another snipper.

yeah, i'm getting tired of this one-- Chicago is NOT taking back salary. they need a few pure dumps that net them depth or picks... but mostly they just NEED cap relief. that's all there is to it. Sharp may end up in T.O., but Kabs won't be heading back. Not unless it's a blockbuster that nets us an extra salary... but that's highly doubtful.

Semin and one of Wash's G prospects is a pretty high yield for Kabs and Stal, but we'll see...

all i know is that Burke is gonna drop a few deals in the next month or so that will surprise people and continue to turn the team into something worth at least a shot at the ECF's in a few years...

also, Hjarmlsson is gonna command a pretty sweet paycheck, so look for him to go somewhere. in an 'i doubt it'll happen' blockbuster, Burke would be wanting Hjarmlsson back on a big deal.

Burke is definitely going to be in on Sharp, reportedly not interested in Kovalchuk as per a comment he made to ESPN. I'm sure it's going to be an active summer, Burke knows the lack of scoring is a major problem. If he doesn't go for Kovalchuk, I expect him to explore a bunch of creative avenues to try and find top 6 forwards, but I feel it'll be difficult.

With Sheldon Souray wanting out, I think the Oilers would consider a Kaberle + Komasarek for Penner
their first Next season and their back up goalie. That could be the big deal they are thinking of. The Oilers are pretty intent on making a huge impact next season with Hemsky back and the arrival of Seguin or Hall. Throw that monster deal at Kovalchuk if we have the cap space (Not sure if we do) and we have a team ready to throw down.

Kovalchuk
Kessel
Penner
Phaneuf
Schenn/Finger

bad deal for Toronto, bad deal for Edmonton. The Leafs don't need another backup goalie and Penner isn't a top six forward IMO (he's a top six forward on the worst team in the league). Edmonton was hands down the worst team last year, and there is no way they are giving up their first, especially after witnessing what happened when Toronto gave up 2 1st rounders for Kessel, expecting to improve in the standings.

I think the better suitor will be a playoff team that's desparate for a puck moving d. The names I've heard mentioned are Buffalo, Jersey, Pitts, LA...Personally out of that group, I'd love to make a deal w/ LA...but the good news is it's almost draft day and all this Kabs speculation will finally come to an end (hopefully)!

Finger, seriously?

Souray is done, he is hurt all the time now. He's also a Prima Donna. Penner is inconsistent as **** too. The guy vacillates between 1st liner and 4th liner continuously. if Leafs want to gamble on an Oiler that is likely to be dumped it would be Hemsky. He has had injury problems recently, but it a great playmaker from the LW and would be a good match with Kadri and Kessel. Oilers would likely dump him for a prospect and a 2nd rounder.

Doubt that. They consider him the Kobe Bryant of hockey. He is their franchise.
