That was certainly the greatest season for a Leaf ever.

Yup, one of the best ever.

I always ask my buddies if you were building a team who would you want as captain - Gilmour or Sundin?

No question in my mind - Sundin had more pure talent, but....

He's my favourite Leaf but I wouldn't say best Leaf ever.

Cant' forget Ted Kennedy, Darryl Sittler, Mats Sundin and I'm sure there are more.

My vote would go to either Kennedy or Sundin.

Mats. Though really the Leafs have never really had many great players. Dougie did it for such a short time, so I can't give it to him. I'd be embarrassed to tell a Habs fan that Wendel Clark was the greatest. Sittler, Keon....more hyped today than what they were I bet.

I also can't look too far back before '67. How good was the hockey back then, in those black and white videos.

Sittler, probably, or Salming.

I'd go with Sittler or Salming as well, personally. I'm a little biased, so my pick is Salming. He was absolutely incredible.

its sad how old the Leafs frahcise is and the best we can name are Wendal Clark, Darel Sittler or even Mats Sundin (my fave player)... they r good but not great

compare to all the greats Montreal can name in a heart beat..... :(

***Salming is the best......

Kessel has the skills to take the mantle, IMO. If they can only surround him with sufficient talent.

No, he doesn't. Great scorer, but no way in hell does he even sniff Top 5 Leafs ever when he's done.

As for Dougie, I don't know if he's the best Leaf ever, but he's easily Top 3.

My all-time favourite Doug Gilmour moment:

I agree about Kessel, he doesn't have the all-round game to take mantle.

And the one minus I have for Dougie being in the top 3 as a Leaf is that he only played 5.5 seasons in Toronto. Longevity is a factor for me when considering the all-time greats of a franchise.

I think Gilmour was the most quickly adopted Leaf ever. He arrived in Toronto and his style of play just appealed to all leafs fans. He might have had the best single season in Leafs history but he is not the greatest leaf ever. Not even particularly close. The tenure just isn't long enough.
