i love grabo but this is an overpayment by a solid 750k-1mil per year. lombardi, connolly, armstrong, and komisarek need to be dumped now more than ever.

Seriously, 5.5 million per season? If Burke is guilty of anything it's been poor cap management and this just adds to it. I like Grabbo but not for that money.

This is going to hurt maybe just as much as that Jeff Finger signing.

I like Grabo a lot but he certainly did not give us a discount. I still think he would have fetched 6m per in the open market..but I expected him to sign for at least 5. This is essentially the max term and annaul salary I expected him to sign here for. SMH.

My worst fear was him going to Detroit and becoming a allstar in that system. I'm still not sure if he has that upside...

Theres a no trade clause too. Let the count down to Burkes firing now. Lol, this is how the negotiating went.

Grabo's agent: So, we want 5.5 mill per year, 5 years...OHH and a no trade clause

Burke: Okay!

The CBA will more than likely call for another salary rollback - last time it was 20% - if it is 20% again - that is $1.1M

His contract would then be for $4.4M - if there is another round of salary rollbacks
as I expect in this new CBA.

Players with 2nd line talent should be making 3 - 4 million a season

I don't even know what to say if he got a no-trade clause. Personally, I wouldn't give them out ever but if you are, they should be restricted to the very best players. Did Burke not learn from Komi's no movement clause? Seriously. It's bad enough you overpay for a guy but then you limit the teams ability to get out from that contract should things not work out.

Jeff Blair said he got a limited no trade clause. He has to list some teams that he would like to go to.

10 team NTC, but in comparison to how quick the Liles deal vs Grabo got done, I think it was pretty strong stance on Grabo's part that he wasn't going to give us a discount and he was willing to take it to FA to get what he wanted. I think people can criticize the timing (why didn't we give in after some more time), but this was more or less, I believe, we sign Grabo at this deal or we let him walk.

Still, he shouldn't even have gotten that much. You can't overpay, give the lenght and then limit yourself in managing the team.

I'm a little disappointed he wasn't traded at the deadline

I read somewhere that Burke turned down a 1st rounder for him

That basically limits two-thirds of the league as options should the contract become a problem in a year or two. These clauses should be limited to the elite players if you're even considering giving them out.

I would have preferred they move him for the first-rounder, taken a stab at signing him as a FA if he hits the market or just use those funds on someone else while giving a couple of our youngsters a shot to round out the season.

If buffalo got a first for Kaustad, we couldve gotten 2 first round draft picks for grabovski.

How does a deal so middling spend so much money retaining their core?

To be honest I'm more concerned at the # of years than the price. Considering what Hemsky got I'm not surprised at 5.5. Based on Grabovski's production he's right around that range, but that is a long ass time to be under contract. I felt 2 years at around ~5m would've been perfectly fine

Regardless, if this isn't a vote of confidence in his play I dunno what is. Grabovski has to play better though.... (HE IS BEING PAID MORE THAN KESSEL NOW :-? )

I won't complain about overpaying a good player like Grabbo. The deal only looks bad because we have some millstone contracts on our books (Armstrong, Komi) and Connolly, and then he inherited Lombardi to get Franson (who is being benched for Komi  ).

I'm kinda disappointed Franson's getting the boot too. It's true we have some bad contracts but you can't deny Grabbo's overpaid for his production. You could have taken that money and put it towards a true front line C. The good thing is Connoly's only signed for another season. You could have taken on salary in a trade and then given you're young guys a shot or slid Bozak down to the second line.
