Rumour: Leafs make offer for Bernier

Post#1 » by Ducksplatt » Tue Jul 17, 2012 7:46 pm

Andi Petrillo: Hearing the Leafs have put in an offer for G Jonathon Bernier

https://twitter.com/andiphnic/status/225047926278328320

Reading on twitter that right now it is Frattin and a 2nd or 3rd rounder. All speculation so take it with a grain of salt.

Probably be the most important move of Burke's reign if it happens. I hope to god we get ourselves a decent goalie

If the leafs dont get themselves a decent goalie they will be in the same situation as last year.
Start very fast paced, then towards the end of the year they will need their goalie and he will be nowhere to be found.
If this is true burke better hop all over it, especially after quick just signed a monster deal meaning bernier will never be a starter in LA nation

best to trade for a prospect to replace your 2 prospects.

It is the smarter and safer move then going after Luongo. Lu is the more established goalie and would probably do better off the bat, what this does is target a goalie that could be your franchise for 10+ years.

It also puts pressure on Gillis to lower his demands if a Bernier deal is not there. I think the Leafs would have been better off making an offer on Price to a huge contract first, that would have put pressure on Montreal and Vancouver.

But Burke has his ideals and that's killing this franchise.
I won't sign restricted guys because I don't believe it. Meanwhile it's part of the CBA and everyone has that option.
I won't sign long-term deals to circumvent the cap because I don't believe it. Meanwhile all other teams are taking advantage of that to manage their cap.
I'll set my own deadlines just cause my players are too fragile to handle the pressure.

While I agree that these 14 year contracts are rediculous, Burke needs to get off his high horse and start doing whatever is possible to get talent and build a winner.

I'd much rather go with Bernier than Luongo. We may need to give up more in return, but we're keeping along with establishing youth. If the Leafs can get Luongo for a salary dump and a B level prospect, then maybe...but it's looking like Vancouver wants full value for him.

I'd rather just roll into next season with Reimer and Scrivens.

LOL The Leafs are going no where, but lottery...MLSE doesn't know how to manage cap teams, you've seen it with the raptors, and same will happen with leafs.

Sure they might surprise and make the playoffs one year or two, but they won't go anywhere. There not bad enough to draft real difference making talent, but not good enough to do anything.

I am just plain sick and tired of Burke and his half-assed rebuilding/patching holes/praying to god type of management. What's the great hope this off-season? converting a winger to centre and hoping it works? Not just the centre but the FIRST-LINE Centre? Give me a effin break already. I wager JVR struggles and ends up going back to the wing.

Now we are looking at significant assets being lost to address the goaltender position... again. I pray it's Bernier and not Luongo, as he is still young and doesn't get paid way too much. Frankly I think Vancouver is nuts if they think they can dump him without more than a middling return. That guy makes a ton for playing great during easy stretches and then folding badly in crunch time. He's never going to win anything, his playoff history of performance is just too ingrained and repeated time and time again. Best thing in my opinion is just roll Reimer/Scrivens like Crowned mentioned.

I hope the Leafs are clearly out of the playoff picture (if a miracle doesn't happen and Carlyle and actually turn this into a good club) by mid-season. Burke and his whole team gets sent packing by New MLSE, and the new GM has the trade deadline to dump vets, and start a ground up rebuild.

Frattin and a 2nd or 3rd are not significant assets to give up for a starting goaltender (or in other words, our biggest need of the past 7 years).

Yeah, if Bernier works out then that a huge steal.

Not sure how much of an upgrade Bernier is going to be over Reimer or Scrivens. Can't say I've seen him play that much but he seems to be in a similar boat as the current Leafs goalies, it's sink or swim time.

What we need is a veteran goalie who doesn't have a gross contract like Bobby Lu, which I'm not sure is available any longer.

I've definitely been vocal in the past about patience with the team/franchise, but BB has failed the franchise/fans w/ putting a respective club together at the NHL level.

I guess there's Tim Thomas, haha...

While Reimer and Scrivens (moreso him) have potential, these are guys taken later or signed who you're hoping become NHL level or elite goalies. Bernier was drafted high due to his established level of potential to be exactly that.

That's not to say he's going to reach it and the others won't. But I'd take a flyer on a guy with higher potential than relying on Reimer/Scrivens entirely. Plus, you can never have enough goaltending prospects.

After Raycroft and Toskala you would think the Leafs would be more incline to chase a finished product rather then another project you hope can be an elite starter.

If you can land Bernier on the cheap then by all means;
But add someone who you are sure you can start in front of him and make him earn it.

I think the problem the Leafs have when they go with the young prospect route is they go all in on the prospect, try to hand them the job and then don't find that stabilizing force to backup/support the prospect or have a stabilizing goalie start while the prospect develops a bit behind them until ready.

And I don't believe Raycroft/Toskala were considered the same level prospect as Bernier. I agree, I wouldn't give up the world for him but the failures of the past with prospects would not stop me from pursuing someone like Bernier because he has the potential to be your goalie for the next 10 or 15 years if he reaches his potential.

If I was the Leafs, I actually would have made a RFA offer on Price. Montreal probably matches but at least he's established more and still young enough to be your goalie for many years to come. Too late now and we know Burke and his damn ideals that sound nice in theory but are only hurting the Leafs while other teams take advantage of the rules and ways to get around them.

Yeah, the Leafs tend to let any young goaltender face the trial by fire.
I don't think adding Bernier is a bad idea, but I would be adding him as a back-up if the price is right and still adding a starter, if he is the super prospect folks hope then he should have the job in a season.

Bernier is not on that much of a higher level then those guys were;
Tosk I'll give you, but more then Raycroft?

He was a year removed from winning the Calder when the Leafs traded for him.

Bernier has also done a heck of a lot less at the NHL level then either Tosk or Raycroft had before the Leafs added them. If you trade for him you really need a safety net.

This is a team that can score, but has had terrible issues in their own end.
Lu's contract is terrible, but at least you are almost assured the playoffs if you add him.
