The Maple Leafs' con job

Hey guys,

According to Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star, the Toronto Maple Leafs are swindling their fans on a regular basis by passing off Wellwood, Stajan, and Steen among others as stars of the future because the team coddles the players too much by protecting them from criticism when they play poorly and deserve it, and gives them way too much credit when they are performing only at a decent level.

It is quite clear now that the Leafs and MLSE in particular are accountable only to themselves, not to the fans who pay a lot of money to watch a very crappy, arrogant, unaccountable non-playoff calibre team play an uninspiring brand of hockey at the ACC. By the way, the Leafs have missed the playoffs for 2 of the past 3 seasons. A third non-playoff year is almost a certainty due to the Leafs inept management team, and MLSE's self-serving Board of Directors.

In order to show your displeasure towards MLSE and GM John Ferguson Jr. and the rest of the Leafs for their sheer incompetence and unaccountability, you could boycott all Leafs home games, or show up at the ACC at all Leafs games booing, yelling out disparaging remarks, and carrying signs that read: FIRE JFJ!, FERGUSON SUCKS!, PEDDIE AND THE REST OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF MLSE ARE BOTH LOSERS!, SCREW THE LEAFS!, etc.

What do you guys think?

The Maple Leafs' con job

Passing off Wellwood and other fringe players as stars of the future is a cheesy swindle

[i]In the delusional world of Toronto Maple Leaf hockey, even a middling mook such as Kyle Wellwood can be transformed into marquee flashy guy.

On Tuesday, the forward was a healthy scratch and there were rumours yesterday of pending demotion to the minors. Nyuh-uh, insists GM John Ferguson, while clearly implying that a message has been sent. "We expect more. We know he's capable of more. This is an opportunity for him to take a step back, to see where he's at.''

Wellwood has already taken a step back. He's regressed. The Leafs, however, at least for public consumption, appear conflicted

I'd like to know when any member of Leaf management tried to pass Steen, Stajan or Wellwood off as a star. I've never heard anyone do it, or read about it.

They've explained that they've been extremely high on Steen, and rightfully so. He IS going to be a good player, but no star in the league.

I don't think anyone has considered Stajan a star in the league. He's simply a 3rd line player that can play on the penalty kill, and has the potential to be an above average defensive player.

As for Wellwood, well...he has the tools to become a star in the league. Between his skating, stick handling, and creativeness...everything is there. However, his head is preventing him from reaching that status. He's currently injured, which could be used as an excuse. However, he did not train in the offseason, and looks completely out of shape. If he get's his stuff together, he could be a player that makes a difference on this team for a long time.
