I used to be a pretty big Leafs fan, but the Raptors stole my heart during the lockout. I still watch as many Leaf games as i can but sometimes its too hard.
Lets say that the Leafs end up with the first overall pick (looks like they will by the way they're playing) and pick Steve Stamkos first overall.
I have a few questions.
Is Steve someone we can re-build a franchise?
Where do you think he ranks between the young great players who have been drafted recently (Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin etc)?
Is he going to be anywhere close to as good as Crosby or Ovechkin (judgjing by hype)?

Stamkos is certainly someone you can build your franchise around not only because he's extremely talented but hes apparently also a great leader and has tons of leadership skills. If I had to compare him to a young player Id compare him to Jonathan Toews (not in exact skill) but in terms of a player who is a good at all parts of the game and is going to be a future captain.

that might be a good comparisson, in terms of overall impact. Thats about where I see his general level or value or whatever
I was asking my dad about him (since he's an OHL superfan who watches like 5 games simultaneously every night lol) and he thinks he's just below patrick kane as a prospect.
(my dad also said Sidney Crosby would be a poor man's paul kariya, so he might not know what he's talking about)

Longtime hockey writers and scouts have told me that.
The one big advantage Stamkos has over Tavares is that hes a much better skater then Tavares. To me Tavares is very similar to what Jason Spezza was in being a dominant junior player even though he wasnt a great skater. Thats alot what I see when i watch Tavares , a kid who dominates on skill and mind. Scouts say Tavares is one the best prospects they've ever seen from the circles on in.
