The Leafs have traded for Jamal Mayers....they gave up a 3rd round draft pick. Just found this out on Sportsnet.

I was just going to post this here. I'm alright with this trade, not every player that you bring in needs to be an allstar. Mayers brings some needed grit to the team, can killer PKs, and knows his role; think basically Kilger for Mayers.

I can't wait for the draft tomorrow!

I dont mind this one bit.

Mayers is one of the better third liners in the league, signed for two more years at just 1.4 million a season and hes a very quality vet who will drop his gloves to protect the younger players and this will be a valueble player on next years team seeing it will be very young. This guy was good enough to play for team Canada at the world and is the prototype Brian Burke type of player and makes our previously soft team alot tougher fast. This team is going to get tougher ASAP with Coates coming on and soon to be Burke.

3rd rounders sometimes turn out, but hardly. Plus we already have like 2 other 3rd's after this trade.

I don't mind this one bit. I've always been a Mayers fan, and I think this has Ron Wilson written all over it.

IMO this has to mean the end of someone whether it be Tucker/Poni/Antro. But I like Mayers, despite him being 33. He's signed to a reasonable deal and we've got our own 3rd rounder left, so we still have a chance to add some quality prospects. Let the games begin.

Good acquisition and a home town boy with grit, having traded Kilger and Belak, we needed some sandpaper and someone to stick up for the young guys coming in...

comical

trade basically a late 2nd rounder for a 33 year old

I knew all that rebuild talk was an outright lie from the start. It will never happen here. Ever. Unless mlse sells the team

Since when does 70th overall = late 2nd rounder? Fletch has done a fantastic job so far, and I questioned this move too, but I'd like to see what else he does today to judge his overall performance.

yeah, add a player to stick up for the young guys...buy trading away a young guy

makes perfect sense lol

trade kilger for a pick, brag about all the picks you have and how important players can be found outside the first round...then use the pick to trade for a player even older than kilger lol. This is bizarre

I don't mind this move one bit btw...he brings a facet to the Leafs game that they sorely lack. He kills penalties, he can skate, he hits and he's a smart hockey player. I'll take it essentially for Kilger.

For those who wanna know, the Leafs had 2 selections in the 3rd round, theirs and Florida's. They now have one selection in each of the first 4 rounds.

Round/Picks

1/1
2/1
3/1
4/1
5/3 (Belak trade and Hal Gill trades...i think :s)
6/1
7/1

Essentially this was Kilger for Mayers.

Leafs have been trying to get him for awhile, i know JFJ was very high on him. I don't mind it, he's a tough player and we definetly needed to get tougher.

Im laughing at people who are complaining about losing the pick(a 3rd rounder). Do you even know what the % rate of a 3rd rounder playing in the league is? Its averages out to like 3-4 out of 30. We also already had 2 third rounders so we still have one left with and they arent exactly hard to get if you really want to aquire another one. I also dont understand why people think this move alone all the sudden shows that they arent willing to rebuild. Its obvious that the face of this team is greatly going to be changed and I wouldnt be one bit suprised if this move was made to make it easier to get rid of Tucker.

We just got a read solid player for a pick that had a very minute chance at every playing in the league. He's from Toronto, will fight, good penalty killer, good veteran and only signed for two seasons at a cheap rate. Hell If Sundin were to leave Mayers would be as good a candidate as any to be the leafs interim captain until they can find a legit superstar. Mayers will be a fan favorite withing the first few months of the season. For a team ready to insert alot of young players Mayers is exactly the type of player you want them leanring from and makes our soft team instantly tougher.

Fletcher made a good deal in my books.

He brings leadership skills and he's gritty player that will stick up for his teammates. I think playing in his home town will bring out the best of him
