There was also a strong sense there could be some changes coming soon – a sense helped by the presence in the press box of Chicago Blackhawks assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
The Hawks are mulling new contracts for three of their potential free agents – Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Duncan Keith.
The club, like any other, has cap considerations, and economics dictate the Hawks can't sign all three without shedding at least one of their existing, big dollar contracts.
Among those contracts are Patrick Sharp (over $4 million the next two seasons), Kris Versteeg ($3.08 million next season), Dustin Byfuglien ($3 million in each of the next two seasons), and Cam Barker ($3.1 million over the next two). Defenceman Brent Sopel is owed $2.5 million this season, and $2 million in 2010-11. Sopel was mentioned on Hockey Night In Canada Saturday as a possible Leaf trade target.
Leafs GM Brian Burke is said to be seeking draft picks to compensate for the three high-round picks surrendered in the Phil Kessel trade with Boston.
There might be room for the Leafs to also take on salary, if it comes with a draft pick or picks.
This might be good... don't like the taking on salary, but hopefully we can get some decent picks..
What do you guys think ??
