He's cheap ($5 million AAV), he's in the same age range as the rest of their core (26 yo), he started last season (51 of 67 games) and does a lot of the things that Thibs expects his C to be able to do (roll and cut, rim run, rebound on offense; challenge shots at the rim, rebound on defense). Nick Richards isn't flashy but he's a 7 footer with a near 7'5" wingspan, athletic and explosive. I believe Richards ranked in the 95+ percentile on both offensive and defensive rebounds per minute last season. Kessler has more upside and is more talented than RIchards but Richards is fine IMO for what the Knicks need.
Among the 31 qualifying centers (1500+ minutes), Richards ranked 13th in OREB% and 16th in DREB%.
Among other potential trade targets, here are the OREB% ranks:
Capela 1st
Kessler missed the minutes cut off (1493 minutes) but would have been 8th
No other targets in the top31
And for DREB%:
Capela 12th
Kessler would have been 18th
Again no other targets in the top 31
Paul Reed, whom I wanted, was 3rd in OREB% and 23rd in DREB%.
