Counterpoint - boxing is a perfectly fine place to channel your delusion and nostalgia.
I dunno man, if the appeal of influencers punching 60 year olds hinges on the off chance the geezer gets in one lucky punch then yes I'd say that qualifies as delusion and an opportunity to sport a gold lame dress after spending 10k on a ringside ticket
I'll stream me some Khruangbin instead
I don't think it's a bad thing for people to watch. Seems like more folks thought that Mike would actually be able to hang in there or knock the guy out. I didn't expect anything so I didn't bother.
Unfortunately as much as I hate it, I'd rather see people watching spectacle fights as opposed to boxing just dying out altogether. This stuff seems to draw more than regular pros
If Mike is gonna do exhibition fights, that's fine, but why not do it against guys closer in age who still have the itch to get in the ring? Meh.
A poster on the GB summed up exactly why I watched:
I think people just wanted one last look at Tyson, and had the hope that he might at least ring Jake Paul's bell once. It didn't happen, which isn't a huge surprise given the massive age gap and all that, but it was still kind of fun to see even Old Mike out there one last time.
I think you're about my age - a kid around the time that Tyson Mania was hitting. He's obviously not the GOAT but might have had the most electric, though brief, period of dominance. For a brief moment he was probably bigger than the sport itself. Another poster compared him to Derrick Rose but better respective to his sport, which hits it all the way down to the fall from grace. But yeah, I did just want to see him trot out there and stand in the ring again, as weird as that must seem from a fan of the sport.
I can't ever see myself getting INTO into boxing but it is a blast now and again. Every once in a while I go down a boxing lore rabbit hole, which are a ton of fun, and watch the associated fights. Would definitely appreciate a heads up as top fights crop up. There's obviously a lot of good new fighters
