OT Hearing Aids

Post#1 » by Luv those Knicks » Tue Apr 29, 2025 1:18 am

For the geriatrics among us. I've needed a hearing aid for a while and I went to a place today and it was great. Huge difference.

But my question is, has anyone shopped around? Compared prices? I'm wondering what a regular price is? I know you can get cheaper ones, but the pricy model blew me away with it's efficiency. I'm curious if anyone has any experience shopping around for these.

Thanks.

Not sure where you are getting them from, but I have heard people say Costco has them at a better price. Not sure if that applies to you, but something to consider.

Are you a candidate for a Cochlear implant?

I’ve heard the AirPods Pro are great if you’re in a pinch but the pricier stuff are definitely more dedicated

It's a tough thing to research. Costco options are certainly cheaper (though not cheap)

https://www.costco.com/hearing-aid-center.html

You can find $200 hearing aids, but I suspect those are non specific. Hearing loss can be specific, for example, at low frequencies, I have mild hearing loss, but with high requencies, my hearing loss is extensive. A good hearing aid won't amplify everything, but will custom amplify the frequencies according to your hearing and they're adjustable for outdoors, indoors, can even attack to a phone or TV, so I wouldn't go any cheaper than Costco.

The issue I have is that the place I went, the person was very nice and the hearing aids are obviousy quality, but they cost like $4 grand. Over twice what costco's cost. American made, comes with a warrantee. If it's twice as good, then I don't mind spending money on something like this, which is impotant. I've been losing the ability to have a conversation in recent months.

But I don't know if I'm being ripped off. Taking to my doctor, going through insurance is a hastle.

Reddit has a hearing aid area, maybe I'll ask there. But if anyone here has some experience with this, I'd be interested.

Thanks.

My test was interesting. I heard sonds at a lower decibel when the sound was touched to my skull, so the sound isn't getting through my ear very well, but with with the hearing aid, it was loud and clear. Cochlear implants require surgery, so that's probably more money and a bigger process. The hearing aid came through loud and clear, so I'm guessing, in my case, cohlear is probably not necessary.

I think a test is worth doing for anyone who thinks they might have partial hearing loss. The test was very reveaing. It can be done at a center, maybe even Costco, I imagine, and dosn't require a doctor.

I’m not interested in hearing aids or glasses. I welcome interacting with other humans less

That was fun for a while, but I'm starting to miss human interaction.
