I just can't imagine a bunch of guys that have been in the league for years using a short training camp period to prove themselves for a spot on the roster. Last year they had guys like Shamet, Warren, Okeke and Morris on camp deals. Shamet was the only one that was given a guaranteed contract while Warren and Okeke competed in the G-League all year just for the last roster spot to be given to Tucker.
These guys either can’t get a guaranteed deal elsewhere or would prefer to risk it to play for a contender. It’s likely the former as both Brogdon and Shamet have to know that it’s likely that only one of them makes the roster.
Another option might be - similar to last year - the Knicks delay signing contract for 14 days into the season to create more flexibility. Spotrac has us with about $148k in space below the 2nd apron after signing a rookie scale player to round out the roster. Most of that room, 105k, would be used up if Kolek was salary dumped to create room for Brogdon.
I’m not sure the cap math, but could delaying signings for 14 days create some room to work under the 2nd apron. Or does keeping a non guaranteed on the books for a player with an injury history also create the flexibility.
In hindsight, not playing it out with OG Anunoby last year was a mistake. His market was limited to Philly and once PG signed there NY could have gotten OG on a much better deal, closer to the 37.5per year that Mikal signed for va the 41per year he got. In a 2nd apron world, that 3.5mm difference matters.
