OT: Weapons

Post#1 » by RHODEY » Mon Aug 11, 2025 6:11 pm

So to celebrate my brother's birthday we have a tradition of going to the movies. He already saw Superman, so the choice was between the Fantastic Four and Weapons. We chose Weapons and I have to say I'm glad we did. There's not much to say about it without giving up spoilers. But if you are looking for an originally done Thriller/Horror flick you should check it out.

He's teaming up with Cregger again and they're working on a new Resident Evil movie. I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

I don't really think that Weapons was scary outside of a few jump scares. I was moreso trying to piece together what actually happened to the kids, which kept my attention throughout. It was clever how all the individual threads all merged together.

But there are multiple scenes in this film that are outright hilarious. The final part of Act 3 had me in awe of the sick camera work, but also laughing at the same time.

Outside of the run time being a bit too long, my one gripe was

Spoiler:
The witch killed the gay couple right after they had made a mean looking lunch. That was really f*cked up.

I liked how they scattered really suspenseful stuff between the lighter tones, and that the danger moments could come at any time.

Spoiler:
The scene where the mother comes out of the house with scissors and gets into the passenger seat...that was a GREAT moment.

Then there was this cool escalation for Julia Garner's character. She goes to the liquor store and grabs booze, and it's a little sad and a little funny in the moment. Then she goes to the liquor store and you can see a woman following her because of mirrors in the aisles, but it's a false scare. Then finally, she's at the gas station and we get ANOTHER mirror view of Benedict Wong running up which finally pays off the three scenes of priming us for a scare moment.

It's definitely got a lot of outright funny moments, even during some really dark parts. But I also feel like it helped make a REALLY dark premise more digestable for a broader audience. Like, I think Bring Her Back is a great horror movie and one of the best this year...but I'm not in a hurry to watch it back. Not because it was scary, but because it's soooo depressing. That's the opposite for Weapons. I'm contemplating going to peep it a second time if I can get surround sound seats. That bit of lightness and relief hurt the "scare" level, but made it way more accessible.

I feel similar for Hereditary. I LOVE that movie, but it's so foul that I only watch it once in a blue moon. I've seen Sinners three times already

Hereditary was so messed up. I watched it once and that was enough for me.

Yeah I agree. I saw some people complain about the tone switching between horror and comedy, but this is some extremely dark subject matter and Julia Garner (The Silver Surfer!!!)'s character and the humor from other characters really helped to balance things out.

Spoiler:
The scissors scene and when Benedict Wong rushed Garner and Brolin's characters after being bewitched...whoo boy.

The soup feeding scenes were so gross.

I kept laughing during certain scenes because clearly the running in the film was inspired by Naruto

Yeah that's the thing about it,it is tough to categorize. Maybe not enough sustained "scary" to call it a straight up Horror movie but there were definitely parts where it felt like "Insidious".

and yeah that last scene was hilarious...while still a little terrifying :D

Cregger had to recast basically the whole movie because the writer and actor strikes threw schedules off. I wonder what the movie woulda felt like if it was shot as originally cast.

Great, but the ending was a bit too abrupt for me

I see a lot of Sinners fans but am I only one who thinks it's just another vampire movie? Vampires that are afraid of garlic and stakes? What made it more unique than other vampire movies? They say it has blues music, but the vamps were not even attracted to the music but rather the gathering of people.

What do you think makes it unique maybe I'll rewatch from a different perspective

I don't think Cooigler did anything to reinvent vampires. The clever twist came more from tying vampirism to cultural appropriation and assimilation on one hand, and the music industry for another. Then it's just execution. The direction, acting, characters, and world-building are all elite. So, it's not about changing the tropes, but leaning into them to let the audience focus on everything else the movie has going for it.

Sinners was a good movie, they tried something new and it worked for the most part. It wasn’t a 10/10 for me as I thought some parts were slow but still a very good film.

Haven’t seen Weapons yet but it’s top of the list.
