I don't think it is, if it is though it might be on an obscure channel like 9 or something. MSG is one of a few teams that are broadcasting all of their Pre-Season Games.

Coud we have amnestied Lin in year 3?

Post#103 » by HarthorneWingo » Sat Oct 13, 2012 8:13 pm

Not trying to start any trouble here. Just curious. I'm watch NBA-TV's Knicks' preview and Barkley said that he didn't like us not re-signing Lin because if it didn't work out in years 1 and 2, we could've amnestied him in year 3. Is that true? (I would assume that his year 3 money would still count against the cap).

No we couldn't have we already used the amnesty. I also don't think we would have been able to sign & trade him either because we of our cap situation.

no

amnesty provision was only for players under contract at the time the CBA expired, which doesn't include Lin, and I believe the amnesty provision had to be used by the end of this year or something anyway

How does Barkley get on TV and go with something like that without first checking his facts? He just embarrassed himself, again. To make matters worse, no one on the show has challenged that statement.

No cant amnesty him. You could use the spread provision to move the money around however there is no point since we will already have been over the cap that we would have regained no flexibility even if we had amnestied him. So no matter what we could not have signed another player. The only benefit would be that it will save Dolan money but it does not impact the salary cap.

Something I was wondering, could we have signed & traded him after a year?

Among the rules:

-Must have been under contract at the time the new CBA came out. He wasn't even with the team then and even if he had been whatever new contract he inked this summer wouldn't have been in place at the time of the CBA.

-Only allowed to use the amnesty once- which they already did with Billups.

As far as I know, yes they could have dealt him after a year, 2 years, 3 years whatever as long as it was allowed under the rules for teams over the cap and/or over the apron etc.

Happens all the time. Many commentators know much less than you'd expect. I've gotten used to it already even though it is aggravating.

Moral of the story: Barkley is a fool. But you already knew that.

that is what I am saying the knicks are over both the cap & the apron so therefore we couldn't have dealt him.

Laziness. They should take some pride in showing that they know what they're talking about. When when TNT hands out big money to these guys just for yucking it up, I guess this is to be expected. But, again, there are others on this show who could have but didn't correct the record.

We got Felton for 4 years 17 million. That 17 million total is close to the 15 Lin would see in year 3 alone. It was smart business. Even if Felton is onloy 80% of what Lin can possible do, though I disagree with that premise, his salary is far more cost efficient. Let's not also forget the Felton likely fits better with our lineup and garners mroe respect from our stars.

This is where it gets complicated- Under the old rules (some still in place) if you're over the first (lower) figure you can trade for contracts adding up to 110% of the outgoing player(s) or somewhere along those lines. If you're over the second (higher) figure you are locked in and cannot make moves trades etc.

Note: I actually forget some of the new rules as I'm in "pre-season form" myself with this having spent the past 4 months concentrating on baseball and football. Maybe someone else could chime in. Calling Kos..

Just watch it online I use firstrow. Also on clutchfans there is a game thread and people put up links. I am glad I was able to at least follow them as well.
