Wait,what?

I thought we were going to see a heavy veterinarian presence?

Actually, I hope this blurb is true. I'd be fine with playing mostly youth if the coaching is actually developmental this time. Veterans can influence from the bench and 2nd unit.

I have to assume the sports writers have cabin fever and are desperate to produce any semblance of a news item, so we'll be getting all kinds of mixed signals until actual news hits

Though I could be wrong, I cannot see what justification there would be for Payton to return.

Taj is actually the right kind of veteran mentor to have around. Bullock could have something to contribute off the bench.

If we draft a pg they'll want a veteran pg around as a mentor. Payton is already here and familiar with the team so it would be easy to stay put with him.

If we draft at a different position then they may sign a pg and still have Payton backup. I dont know if they trust DSJ or Frank enough with that responsibility.

We can also get better PG in Free Agency or trade to be our Rookie PG tutor like Fred, Dragic, CP3 or Conley. Especially if our new PG has size to mark SGs like Ball, Hayes or Haliburton. I like Payton, but he is not a good fit to us.

FVV is a top pg in his prime, I dont see any way he comes here.

Perry has 0 say, and berman mentioned that if randles back he will most likely be coming off the bench.

The same way he was used in New Orleans.

Fred is going to have to choose this offseason:

a) to stay in Toronto and accept whatever they offer. They might save cap space to sign Giannis in 2021. So they will try to avoid longer and expensive contracts. They already have almost 56M in 2021 payroll (Siakam, Powell, OG and Terrence Davis Cap Hold). Its highly possible Raptors offer a one year deal to Fred.

b) to sign with a contender for MLE. They would earn 8-9M/y to play for a no luxury tax team like Lakers and Jazz. Or accept a 6M/y to play for a luxury tax team like GSW, Sixers, Celtics and Nets and probably Rockets, Clippers as well.

c) to sign with a bad team with Cap Space. The only cap spaced teams would be Knicks, Hawks, Hornets and Pistons. These teams can offer a multiple year contract of 60-80M. His current and only substantial contract is a 30M/3.

d) A complex sign and trade deal with Fred going to a capped out team in exchange of a expiring + assets.

*Miami could have cap space to make a move in Fred if the cap doesnt drop significantly. But they are too linked in GIannis and must avoid long term commitments.

I think we have a shot in Fred. Especially if our Front offer give up the Giannis dream.

We really should've just waived Portis, Payton, and Ellington so they could join the Nets in the bubble.
