This article sucked me in and spit me back out. Perfect for this thread.

http://seedmagazine.com/content/article ... ny_aliens/

Just a chunk:

I suggest a different, even darker solution to the Paradox. Basically, I think the aliens don’t blow themselves up; they just get addicted to computer games. They forget to send radio signals or colonize space because they’re too busy with runaway consumerism and virtual-reality narcissism. They don’t need Sentinels to enslave them in a Matrix; they do it to themselves, just as we are doing today. Once they turn inwards to chase their shiny pennies of pleasure, they lose the cosmic plot. They become like a self-stimulating rat, pressing a bar to deliver electricity to its brain’s ventral tegmental area, which stimulates its nucleus accumbens to release dopamine, which feels…ever so good.

The fundamental problem is that an evolved mind must pay attention to indirect cues of biological fitness, rather than tracking fitness itself. This was a key insight of evolutionary psychology in the early 1990s; although evolution favors brains that tend to maximize fitness (as measured by numbers of great-grandkids), no brain has capacity enough to do so under every possible circumstance. Evolution simply could never have anticipated the novel environments, such as modern society, that our social primate would come to inhabit. That would be a computationally intractable problem, even for the new IBM Blue Gene/L supercomputer that runs 280 trillion operations per second. Even long-term weather prediction is easy when compared to fitness prediction. As a result, brains must evolve short-cuts: fitness-promoting tricks, cons, recipes and heuristics that work, on average, under ancestrally normal conditions.

The result is that we don’t seek reproductive success directly; we seek tasty foods that have tended to promote survival, and luscious mates who have tended to produce bright, healthy babies. The modern result? Fast food and pornography. Technology is fairly good at controlling external reality to promote real biological fitness, but it’s even better at delivering fake fitness—subjective cues of survival and reproduction without the real-world effects. Having real friends is so much more effort than watching Friends. Actually colonizing the galaxy would be so much harder than pretending to have done it when filming Star Wars or Serenity. The business of humanity has become entertainment, and entertainment is the business of feeding fake fitness cues to our brains.

Sideline Story wrote:Hey guys, I haven't been able to read all the topics throughout the thread but I came on here to get some input.

Have any of you watched "The Secret", and if so, can I get your takes on it? Thanks!

I met the brain trust behind The Secret which is to say it was a marketing scheme more than a truly sincere guide to life.

The Secret is just a rehash of positive thinking, self-help boosterism that has been a part of the American self-improvement landscape the past 100 years going back to Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill.

In a nutshell, it is based off the same mantra re-packaged a thousand times by various self-help gurus that you are the sum of your thoughts, what you focus on will manifest as your destiny and thus you will attract to you prosperity if you align your mind and spirit accordingly.

This is not particularly deep logic since every person knows this whether they practice it or not.

What it omits is the other reality of life which is that while Ask and You Shall Receive may in fact have some metaphysical validity, you don't always know what you will get.

Stuff like The Secret is very vague and glosses over the complexities of existence such as laws of Karma which are complex and rarely knowable to the average person. The moral issues of human suffering and the religious explanations of them are barely touched upon by such self-help pablum.

The group of people connected to The Secret phenom are professional marketers. They make their living off hustling people out of large sums of money for seminars that don't train you to do anything in particular, just kick the ball forward and perhaps turn you into another self-help guru. In effect, the success of The Secret group is all about supporting each other and building out their network. It is truly the American way.

Basically The Secret has some basic truths in it you can get a thousand other places, but it is shallow and its moral DNA is BS because the people behind it are hustlers.

Rosetta wakes up on Monday morning to begin its journey to try to land on a comet

It has been sleeping quietly in space for more than two and a half years.
But at 10am tomorrow an internal alarm will awaken the Rosetta spaceship, allowing scientists to begin one of the most technologically advanced missions ever attempted.
Put simply researchers are trying to catch a comet.

Lot's of info in the full article.

Anybody else gonna watch the reboot of Carl Sagan's Cosmos featuring Neil Degrasse Tyson? I'm pretty pumped about it. Starts in 5 minutes.

And just like that, the lead has been cut to 8!

It was dope. Glad they bringing the series back and Neil deGrasse Tyson is the perfect guy to do it.

Everytime it gets brought up on how small human history and our solar system is its just mind boggling and always leads me to wonder if we will ever advance to the point where we can understand it all.

You are kidding, right?

This is our solar system:

The distance between out planets is way too big for even understanding what is at the edge of it, let alone the edge of this universe.

When Ray Kurzweil's nano robotic future comes true and we're all immortal half robot half human connected beings...then maybe we'll have enough time to figure this all out. (green font but Ray did predict something like that and he's pretty sick at the prediction stuff)

this is what i believe also.. all of this anunaki stuf doesnt make sense to me.. maybe they know sth about gold we dont :eek1:

according to the episode of ancient aliens that focused on it, they said they needed GOLD to repair their damaged atmosphere. The scientists that were interviewed actually said there was "something" to such a thing.

Also, it could be for mechanical reasons since GOLD is the best conductor in the known universe.

Scientists have a plan to convert light into matter...I need a cosmos episode to explain how this is possible.
