I'm switching my opinion again.

My theory. Melo has already decided he will come to NY as a FA if need be.
He's been talking to the KNICKS, probably through Amare for months.
Now the message has gotten back to NY that Melo will be ours either way.
We go into protection mode. Amare claims we dont need Melo. Now Melo claiming the same.

NJand Denver know something is up so they are attempting to force Melo's hand.
They are using Billups to guilt Melo. Putting Melo in the unenviable position of being the cause for Billups being shipped to Jersey...

That doesn't sound like someone who is eager to settle his extension, honestly.

Again, Melo's idiotic agents are saying one thing, and Melo's demeanor seems quite, quite different.

the nuggets are trying to force carmelo to the nets by using the media. they think the constant questions about a trade will make him crack.

The Melo situation is crazy. Hearing everywhere from #knicks giving up hope to less than 40% chance Melo ends up in jersey.

Well, the Nuggets were on a roll before facing the Kings, Clippers, and then looked lathargic against the underperforming Hornets.

Wow, Melo actually just used the words "New Jersey Nets" ... and said he won't think about them now.

He seems dismissive honestly.

And he's opening up. Props to him for the courage. Now I want him again though :( Showing some real courage right now.

That's where all this fuss is coming from. Melo's words vs His agents' words. Seems like to totally different parties when they aren't. This is ludicrous.

Nope. I'm gonna sit here in my underwear hitting refresh on three different windows until he signs. :x

Furthermore, we should seek the help of a behavioral analyst to interpret Melo's actions. :P

Carmelo knows the Knicks want him. He was referring to stories he's read. Obv Knicks prefer he wait until FA so roster isn't blown up.

Sounds possible. And sounds like his agents are joining the Nuggets in pressuring him.

And Carmelo merch sales would go through the roof if he comes here.

The naswer is no one knows because of the CBA...

It could be 40-60 mill or 5mill, no one knows.

What would the collective bargaining agreement have to be for him to lose $60 million. A max salary = $1 million per year?

Any serious answers? Using the current max contract scale I mean.

Worst case: The cap goes down, the cap percentage for the max contract goes down, the max years go down. Let's say NY will only be able to offer him ~13 MM per season for 4 years (just an out of the blue number, I don't think the scale will go down that low. not even close). That would be a significant loss.
Well, we talked about that in the other thread today. I think it's still so much money that he has to have the freedom to chose what he wants to do. At a certain point you are not slave to your income, you are free to pursue your dream job (in his case playing at MSG).

At least he's admitting there's no clear scoop instead of pretending he's getting text updates 4 times a minute like some reporters.

Melo on Billups: "To see him in all this stuff that’s going on right now, I feel bad about it... That’s just the business of basketball.''

Melo stop with the mixed signals. First you say you feel terrible and don't want him in any trade and now you are saying OH WELL LOL DATS BUSINESS

That would be a loss, but I think we can agree, as you said in your post, that it's highly unlikely there's a cut anywhere near that.

Also, as I mentioned before - don't players get a cut of their merchandise sales? Or is that false?
