Re: Summer League Gm 3: Knicks vs Lakers 10PM EST
I’ll say something nice about Grimes. At least tonight he knew where to stand on offense. The game against the Pacers he kept getting in IQ’s way. There was no moment that I was like, damn, that’s a really bad shot either. Let’s hope he starts knocking them down.
I'm apart of a Knicks podcast! You Should check it out!

Hoping Thibs smells the coffee and keeps Rose and Kemba on a 25 minute cap and spreads those minutes around. We’ll be more dangerous with this backcourt depth if Thibs doesn’t burn everyone out. Yo Thibs! You can finally expand your rotation!

IQ and McBride will watch from the bench as Kemba and Rose burn out what’s left of their knees and you’ll love it.

j4remi wrote:Late game plus an early commute to work means I couldn't write out a recap. But some quick thoughts:
IQ - Just out there looking like a man amongst rookies. He made some really nice reads and passes, but his feel at PG is still a work in progress. There's room for a lot of growth in terms of feel and pace, but he also will do some things like the baseline drive where he found Deuce wide open on the baseline behind him that let you know...kid could really develop into more than just a scoring guard with a sixth man upside.
Obi - Also in man amongst rooks mode...but for someone with so much athleticism, he played a little to finesse for my taste. His best moments were powering through or speeding by guys and some of his best summer league highlights are where he misses the initial lay-up but bodies guys on the drives and has free putbacks after.
Deuce - Thibs is gonna find minutes for this kid if he keeps it up. He'll be the reason Kemba and Rose's health can hold up and they can be well-rested. The defensive highlights are my favorite part but the three balls were cold-blooded.
Grimes - His defense is getting overshadowed by McBride. But Grimes is doing a lot of the little stuff really well. He's a great rebounder, aggressive defender (though the aggression gets him in trouble at times), and his shot selection is good even if it's not falling. His inability to get any separation off the dribble against Summer League guys...a little scary. But I think the shot starting to fall would help change that equation a bit, so I'm still hopeful. Even at worst, he's projecting as a three and D glue kinda guy.
Rokas - Getting more and more comfortable with minutes. I loved when IQ told him to cut through and he hit the trey on the baseline. He needs seasoning, but I see why he was a top-40 mocked player.
Sims - Bad game. He finally looked like a rookie from the fouls to struggling on the glass. The good news is that even when he's off his game, our squad is exponentially better with him as an inside threat. It might just be the halo effect of having Reid Travis back him up...so yeah, the G-league will probably be good for him to get needed reps and development before we start talking about Mitch or Noel trades.
Travis - My least favorite Summer League Player. Is Justin Patton hurt? I'd rather watch him back-up Sims.
Selden - I thought he'd be my least favorite Summer League Player..but he's stepped it up and is my second-least favorite instead.
LMAO

You can say whatever makes you feel better but it doesn’t change the fact that the dude is trash
I was probably one of the more vocal antagonists of that pick (#58) however if the Knicks are looking at the tools and think they can make a player, even if his upside is Chris Anderson, then go for it. Would have preferred Vren, but watching SL, we would have buried him with the rest of the Euro's on the bench.
With Sims physique, size, athleticism, he should have been a top 15 pick. That he was picked #58 (basically almost not picked at all) tells you where the league sees his abilities at presently.

I would feel better about Grimes if he was taller/longer or more athletic.
But his stroke still looks good. He should at least be a good 3 point shooter when he settles down. Thats really his bread and butter right now

Honestly I’m not even sure it’s a bad thing, but I’m assuming Thibs gonna Thibs and we’ll only see McBride as an injury replacement and on back-to-backs unless he surpasses IQ in the rotation. Grimes will be waiving towels with Knox.
Mitch (Noel/Taj)
Randle (Obi for 10 mins)
RJ (Burks for 20 mins)
Fournier (IQ for 12 mins)
Kemba/Rose (24 mins each)

Already giving up on Grimes?
This is why I don't watch Summer League! It means absolutely nothing! Nikoloz Tskitishvili won MVP once. I think Maciej Lampe did too!
Wait until the preseason and by Christmas at least geez!

Look it’s easy to say that now during the off-season while butts aren’t packing seats at the Garden — or other ridiculous out-of-touch statements like you and Chanel calling for a Randle trade — but back in reality…. fans, the media, basically the entire world will go absolutely apesh*t nuts with positivity for the Knicks if/when Thibs’ veteran squad outworks opponents for so-called “meaningless” regular season wins and when the regular season standings show us “equal” or near top contenders.
Prepare yourself, Sham, for the sheer euphoria you’ll feel when we beat Cleveland on a random Tuesday in December because Thibs played Randle, Rose and Kemba 40 minutes each.

i would counter though that iq outplayed payton all season last year and didn't see nearly as many minutes. that isn't even about trying to win, that just seems to be bad coaching.

Thibs can make Rose's and Walker's knees fall off and then in two years, the young guys can take over. I mean, get more minutes behind some guard the Knick traded for, or they'll get more minutes on their new team.
I think the above is a bit too many minutes for Burks and a bit too few for IQ, but it's Thibs, so you might be right.
