Honestly, id rather trade THJ than an unprotected 2018 first (with the luck the Knicks have, it will be a top 3 pick).

Now if theres lottery protection, and Lowry resigns for a decent contract, I can live with it.

Look I like THJ but when its all said and done, I dont think he will be top 5 in this draft class. Right now hes on a hot streak with shooting... ive watched a bunch of his games in college and he has those streaks but he also has streaks where he goes SUPER cold and when that happens you just wanna bang your head cause hes prrtty useless on the defensive side. On the orher hand, god knows, 2018 we might be terrible with a 35 year old Melo, and I have a good feeling we will regret it, just like the last time 739524 unprotected picks Isiah has traded away in the past

Actually, after checking Larry Coon's FAQ, it has now been changed. It used to be five years; as of the new CBA, it is seven:

The "Seven Year Rule" allows teams to trade draft picks up to seven years into the future (for example, if this is the 2011-12 season, then a 2018 pick can be traded, but a 2019 pick cannot). It is common to "protect" picks depending on their position (for example, "we keep it if it ends up in the lottery, otherwise you get it"). This helps to avoid a repeat of some unfortunate past trades, such as the trade between the Cavs and Lakers where LA received what turned out to be the first overall pick in the 1982 draft, which they used to select James Worthy. It is common for these protections to relax over several years. For example, a team might convey its own pick in the first draft in which it is not a "Protected Pick," where a Protected Pick is defined as picks 1-14 in 2012; 1-10 in 2013; 1-6 in 2014; and unprotected in 2015. If the team owns one of the protected picks in 2012, 2013 or 2014, then they keep it; otherwise it is conveyed to the other team. If they make it to 2015 without having conveyed a pick, then the other team gets their 2015 pick unconditionally.

Thus, the Knicks could protect the pick for 2018 and 2019, but in 2020 it would either have to be unprotected or vest as a 2nd/cash.

in terms of making an impact? how about that. lowry doesnt turn us into some wrecking ball of a team. hes either slightly better than felton at everything or about the same. please dont make lowry out to be a top or even good starter.

Slightly better than Felton is all we need. We were a 54 win team with Felton last year. If Lowry can actually guard the PG position well, while providing the same then our celling is a lot higher.
