I think the scary thing about this is that it could set a precedent for Republican governors to fool around with election rules "to protect public health." The Dems had an OBVIOUS solution which is converting to a mail-in election. It'd increase turnout which helps the party, set a precedent for how to handle health fears and avoid alienating the wing of the party most likely to become disillusioned with the process.
Instead, I could absolutely picture Republicans using this precedent to cite "health concerns" as a reason to impose curfews that impact turn out in reverse. Now they have cover...bad faith as it may be to abuse...what aboutism is built on this crap.
Nevermind the fact that it's a blatant middle finger to progressives and probably serves moreso to target down ballot incumbent challengers like Lindsey Boylan than any actual health concerns (because again, the alternative would have been to enact options which empower voters instead of limiting them). Even the most charitable take on this move leaves it tonedeaf at a time when the establishment is supposed to be convincing the progressive wing to work with them on unifying.
Hopefully it serves the opposite purpose. More progressives show up angry to oust anybody tied to the NY machine while moderate voters stay home content in Biden's election security. But either way, this doesn't help when the general election rolls or with any unifying efforts.
