I don't think he can sign until the 10th.

Correct. It's better that way. If he signs his contract first then he's subject to the poison pill provision if he's traded.

If the Cavs want to trade him this month then they should wait and let Kyle sign his extension with his new team.

when a team extends a first round draft pick's rookie scale contract and then trades the player between the date the extension is signed and the date it takes effect. the player's trade value for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the rookie scale contract and each year of the extension. The sending team uses the player's actual salary when calculating their total outgoing salary, and uses the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary.

But that's a lot to ask for a 1st time executive: find trade partners for both Amare & Bargnani, convincing Melo to stay, then convincing James to come. LBJ doesn't have the courage to play in a market like NYC.

Can he part water too? That's a monumental task.

Well, it's not going to happen since Bron is going to Cleveland. But I give Phil props for thinking big. Melo/Gasol would be the best off-season we've had in a long time.

To play alongside Bron and still make close to max , I think he'll take into consideration.

he's never going to a small market like that. not to play with anyone.

Ray Finkle wrote:Hey all. First-time poster, longtime lurker. I registered for primarily two reasons: A) This board is irrefutably awesome and B) I need to get several things off my chest.

1) If Phil is actually trying to shop Amare and/or Bargs, doesn't that strongly imply that he thinks Melo is resigning with us? What would be the point of trading away assets if we aren't going to be building around Melo? If we thought we were losing Melo, wouldn't the most prudent thing be to let contracts like Amare's expire naturally?

2) Why is the collective national sports media so overbearingly infatuated with Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls? I honestly think Rose is probably one of the most overrated players in the history of professional sports. His one MVP was a fraud (Lebron was definitively better that year and proved it in the playoffs) and he's played 50 games in the last three years. Why are all of the ESPN talking heads seamlessly assuming that Melo makes the Bulls this ascendant juggernaut? If (When) Rose gets hurt again, won't Melo be just as alone as he's ever been in New York? What makes the Bulls roster so much superior to that of the Knicks? And finally, considering that Amare's contract expires in one year and that Rose's doesn't as well as the fact that Amare finished last season on a relative tare while Rose watched his team's last game in a suit, if you were Melo, wouldn't you MUCH rather take the chance of being stuck playing with Amare for one season and then having the opportunity to recruit another all-star as opposed to being stuck playing with Rose for several more seasons and having far less cap flexibility going forward? I just don't get the hype as it pertains to Melo and the Bulls being a good fit.

3) The Lakers make even less sense than Chicago, but the (quite obvious) reasons for this reality have been thoroughly articulated on this message board, so I won't repeat them here.

4) I just don't buy that Melo is going to impulsively sign with a team that wasn't on his grandoise free-agency tour. Either the big three re-up in Miami or Lebron goes to Cleveland. Melo isn't going to Miami.

Welcome Ray.
!

Yea I have no idea why the media is infatuated with Chicago other than its a big market and they haven't signed or acquired a decent free agent since Jordan left. Only god knows what Rose will be when he returns but he seems to be giving a half ass welcome to Melo. The Bulls almost got swept by the Wiz but all Of a sudden there a championship contender lol just like the Nets were supposed to be?

He could go to LA to play with his boy Kobe but I really don't see that happening over NY.

I agree with the Amare contract pt you made. I don't think Phil tries to move those if he thinks Melo is leaving so he must have given them some indication. Cause you don't trade Amare and Shump to maybe get Pau it's gotta be about more than that
