Basically a compliation of Giannis' thoughts and relationship with Kidd:

Giannis Antetokounmpo has publicly and repeatedly credited Jason Kidd for being a significant influence on his development and success in the NBA. After Kidd was fired as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2018, Giannis spoke openly about Kidd's impact:

He was a big part of my success. He trusted me, he put the ball in my hands, he motivated me on a daily basis, he pushed me to be great and not to be mediocre. ... I was 19 when he came and he said he was going to put the ball in my hands. The first time I wasn't ready. I told him, 'Coach, I'm not ready to create and make plays for the team.' He said, 'OK, we're going to take our time.' The next year, he put the ball in my hands and I was ready.

Giannis has also described Kidd as someone he loves and cares about personally, emphasizing loyalty and the emotional difficulty he felt when Kidd was dismissed as coach

Their relationship has been described as close and personal, extending beyond just coach and player. Kidd himself has mentioned that he and Giannis have remained in contact, even speaking shortly after the birth of Giannis's son, highlighting their ongoing friendship

Under Kidd’s coaching, Giannis evolved from a raw, inexperienced teenager into one of the NBA’s most dominant players. Kidd was instrumental in giving Giannis more responsibility on the court, notably by putting the ball in his hands and encouraging him to become a playmaker. Giannis has acknowledged that Kidd’s trust and guidance were crucial steps in his development

That is good to know. I remember during that Nico pressed after he traded Luka that Kidd would occasionally look mad when he wasn’t staring with a blank face at the camera like he was trying to not look angry.

I can 100% see him wanting out.

Giannis has the gravity to choose his destination. If Knicks get Kidd, Giannis might ask to come here. Is there any way we can somehow keep KAT? That I dunno but without KAT it would take Bridges (24.9), Hart (19.4), Mitch (12.9) (salaries match up almost perfect) and probably whatever 1st rounders we have and 2nd rounders and pick swaps too. We could use the MLE then on a semi decent SG and/or maybe try for Divo.

Maybe Giannis can force his way to New York if he really wants to be here. I just see no reason for the Spurs to give up the #2 pick to pair a 37 year old Durant with a 21 year old Wembanyama. That's a huge overpay

Uh, if we did reach out it would be tampering.
Tweet doesn't make sense.

Yes and no...Shams has said that PHX is working directly with Rich Kleiman and Durant to find a new team. With only 1 year left Durant probably has a lot of say where he gets traded. So I'm sure he is working directly with his agent who's indirectly working with teams that may want to acquire him.

Basically I'm sure KD knows which teams have interest and which teams don't.

And we all k now where Kleiman wants KD, as well as his family

Under a new coach who in theory utilizes them properly would be lethal. KAT needs a defensive counter-balance that can play the 5 (and more reliable than Mitch). JJJ has deep Rose/CAA connections and is on the final year of his deal. It makes a ton of sense.

I also love you MLE idea for Trent or Beasily. But I also believe Divo is not out of the question either. If he was lighting it up as much as he was here with his Nova buddies then no way we could get him but Minny Divo was not NY Divo. I think McBride, Kolek and some other filler could get him potentially.

We HAVE to drop this DiVo idea unless you’re moving a big salary. It just doesn’t work under the apron and makes our depth issues work.

The last thing we need is to do another overpay because of Villanova. It’s already out the franchise in a bad enough position.

Divo is at 11.99 so he is not ridiculously expensive.

McBride (4.33) + Kolek (2.2)+ Dadiet (2.8)+ PJ Tucker (3.5- team option)

It absolutely can work with one good role player (McBride) and 3 guys who barely saw the floor this year.

And how are you building out a roster?

This trade will hard cap you at the 2nd apron. You will have 8mm for 6 roster spots. Doesn’t work.

I mean maybe you can buy 5 additional 2nd rd picks and round out the roster with 6 rookies making the minimum. No vet minimums would fit.

Brunson/Bridges/Anunoby/Towns/Mitch
Divo/Hart/Huk

6 2nd rd picks.

1. Donte isn’t coming back, get rid of that idea.

2. Don’t assume that Brunson can’t be traded either. He wouldn’t be a good fit with Giannis.

There is no chance that KAT has anywhere near the value to headline a Giannis trade. And I really like KAT, but let’s be realistic. KAT and all the picks we traded for Mikal? That might have worked, but we went all in a year too soon. Fortify the bench and obviously listen in on everything.

trading for Durant is pretty complicated to do if it doesn't involve KAT

I've been using https://www.spotrac.com/nba/trade-machine

I pulled off a few 3-team trades involving Memphis

The first one has us giving up as many as 6 players just to acquire Durant

Knicks acquire:
- Kevin Durant

Suns acquire:
- Mikal Bridges
- Josh Hart
- Miles McBride
- Pacome Dadiet
- Jay Huff

Grizzlies acquire:
- Tyler Kolek
- Ariel Hukporti

Knicks '26 Lineup
G: Jalen Brunson
F: OG Anunoby
F: Kevin Durant
F/C: Karl-Anthony Towns
C: Mitchell Robinson

This trade with PHX and MEM has us giving up OG and Mitch instead

Knicks acquire:
- Kevin Durant

Suns acquire:
- OG Anunoby
- Mitchell Robinson
- Jaylen Wells

Grizzlies acquire:
- Tyler Kolek
- Ariel Hukporti

Knicks '26 Lineup
G: Jalen Brunson
G: Josh Hart
F: Mikal Bridges
F: Kevin Durant
C: Karl-Anthony Towns
6th man: Miles McBride

If it's KAT for Durant with Memphis involved, it's a little easier.

Knicks acquire:
- Kevin Durant
- Jay Huff

Suns acquire:
- Karl-Anthony Towns
- pick or draft rights from Memphis

Grizzlies acquire:
- Tyler Kolek
- Ariel Hukporti

Knicks '26 Lineup
G: Jalen Brunson
G: Mikal Bridges
F: OG Anunoby
F: Kevin Durant
C: Mitchell Robinson
6th man: Josh Hart
G/F: Miles McBride
C: Jay Huff

The only way to acquire Durant without Towns would be using Anunoby’s salary.

I think the math works for an Anunoby + Hart + Tucker for Durant and Nick Richards trade.

But I’m not sure if it’s worth the depth issues for Durant at this point.

I wouldn't trade our two best defensive players for Durant. KAT for Durant I would be down for because it improves our offense and defense. For that I would be fine with Durant's age. But trading 2 very strong defenders and one of them one of the premier 3-d guys in the league, would be taking a step back. Durant and KAT upfront would be getting shredded on defense:

Brunson
Bridges
OG
Durant
Mitch

is a line-up that can be top 8 defensively AND offensively. A KAT/Durant frontcourt with JB in the backcourt would have us outside the top 15, possibly top 20 defensively. And then you have the problem of having 3 guys that need shots + Bridges. That is not going to work. If we trade for Durant, it's gotta be for KAT.

I agree with this. I think the argument for Durant is he gives you a higher ceiling, but over a shorter period of time.

The argument for Towns is you have a longer timeline for things to break your way.

Honestly, I’m just happy that I’m not the one who needs to make this decision. It’s a tough call.

I don’t think there is enough talk here on the most likely outcome this summer - using a tax MLE and replacing 2 vet minimum slots.

The hope is that we add a secondary ball handler and minutes eating big (although im not sure if there is an option better than Precious Achiuwa here).

Ball handler options - Malcom Brogdon, Dennis Schroeder, Spencer Dinwiddie, Tyus Jones, D’Angello Russell

Bigs - Al Horford, Clint Capella, Tray Lyles

If they go BPA, I can see looking into Malik Beasley, Gary Trent Jr, Jake LaRavia

Over the past few seasons, Milwaukee has been able to get a fifth starter on the minimum.

Return to New York Knicks
