Come Wednesday, after the Sixers dropped to 2-12 with a 117-111 loss at Memphis, Embiid indeed informed reporters: "Whoever leaked that is a real piece of shyt." Several NBA team officials with Sixers ties took that as public messaging intended for private relationships. The 2023 NBA MVP went on to claim that the portion of Philadelphia's meeting during which Tyrese Maxey called out his tardiness lasted all of 30 seconds. "But then again, it's Joel Embiid," he continued Wednesday night, "so we’ve got to make everything blown out of proportion."...

Embiid's correct in that all 7 feet of him serves an incredible tentpole for NBA discourse. That's what happens when you shoulder into perennial MVP discussions … while perennially falling short in the postseason. Embiid knows this. Almost two years to the date, when I sat down with Embiid following a Sixers practice, he told me he believed Sixers fans wanted him traded.

Hell, he embraces the noise, crotch-chopping his way to the foul line and cupping his ear to the crowd. He will always be "Troel" as much as Joel, ever since Embiid made waves trolling Twitter during his injury-consumed rookie season.
