I think it's mostly Clyde and I who go on about this one aspect of how this FO operates and that is that they tend to stockpile at a position to build depth in front of a trade.

Knicks added Donte and it was pretty much writing on the wall for IQ.

Knicks stocked up at guard with Payne and Shamet and we all thought Deuce was on his way out, but turns out it was Donte.

Knicks even built up some not that great depth at PF, adding Bates-Diop and Morris, no doubt with an eye to moving Randle.

Kolek and Dadiet are more developmental guys at this point. Or future trade fodder.

It's true. They do front load positions prior to reinforcing a lagging position.

The backcourt now has an interesting mix of skills with Deuce, Payne and Kolek.

To your point, they locked Deuce into a cheap deal BEFORE playing him bigger minutes. That was very calculated.

Then they gave Kolek the biggest guaranteed deal to a 2nd rounder ever.

IOW, they were already sold on Deuce being here and they are already sold on Kolek as well.

With this trade, I expect both to play as the club has planned for this.

This is a trade the Knicks had to make, and one that significantly raises the ceiling of the team.

To reach championship contention, the Knicks needed an efficient scoring big to provide an outlet for Brunson to generate efficient offense, which Randle wasn't. Because Brunson - while a superstar shot creator - is not one of those uber-efficient superstar scorers à la Jokic, Embiid or SGA. We could generate highly efficient corner 3s, but having one of the best shooting big men ever as a pick-and-roll partner should take this offense to the next level.

Randle was a great player for us, and one who received a disproportionate amount of hate for some time, but he was the odd man out after the Bridges trade.

He just didn’t fit well on this team with Mikal and OG, because of the logjam at the 3/4, and because Randle doesn’t have the positional versatility to play the 5. Our best lineups arguably didn’t project to include Randle. When you consider the risk of his extension, especially in his 30s, I think the best direction was always to trade him for value now. And they did.

On the one hand, the team definitely lost some of its 90s aura. It will also miss Randle’s playmaking ability, which was always underrated, and it also lost some depth, both of which put more pressure on Brunson.

On the other hand, the team gained more positional versatility thanks to KAT’s ability to play the 5, and its offensive efficiency should skyrocket. The franchise also got out of the Randle extension just at the right time.

Divo is a big loss, however. We’re really thin in the backcourt and in terms of ball handling.

The Knicks are all in and there's risk involved in every move they make. I think this one's a reasonable gamble.

god shammgod wrote:i honestly just don't know. kat is one of those players who i just never enjoyed. lots of talent but just always struck me a someone who you can't win it all with. this is a risky deal. on top of that they overpaid og and overpaid for mikal. they went from playing it very safe to kind of throwing caution to the wind completely to maximize brunson's prime. which makes sense. he's 28 and the time is now if you're gonna try to go for it with him. and the league doesn't have a team who looks unbeatable. there's more parity than ever before. boston is the closest but the salary cap implications might have them breaking up that team by next summer. and horford is 38 and kp is probably more injury prone than mitch. so i understand the "this is a disaster" people but at the same time it's as good a time as there's been to try to win it all and there might have not been better moves than these out there anytime soon. it'll be interesting to watch. that's for sure.

They’re just following the same plan the Celtics ran. Put together a team that’s all locked in long term and hope the table folds right for them. Don’t really love the trade but can’t imagine completely imploding, unless we end up as injured as last year. Now we just need to hope that Mikal and Kat are big enough upgrades over Donte and Randle that we’re actually better. We do have a lot of the same elements that made Kat successful last year with the Wolves. We’ll see if they can pull it off cuz this is the team now.

I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home
Tell the world I'm comin' home
Let the rain wash away
All the pain of yesterday
I know my kingdom awaits
And they've forgiven my mistakes
I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home
Tell the world I'm comin'

Don’t look now Kat was wilding efficient under Thibs and averaged 12 boards under him. Now I know what he mean when he say Thibs drove him on and off the court.
