If they match it then they must really think highly of Timmy & that shows that maybe people here are underselling his value.

The word is they privately think very highly off him, but weren't expecting 71 million.

In what universe

I doubt planning on signing any big free agents in the next few years and thj is a young, improving player. Its not crazy to think they'll match

With todays NBA salaries I would not be surprised if ATL matched if they have the cap space to do so but I just can't imagine that they will for 4yr 71 million, guess we will see within 48 hours.

12.5 mill a year for Patty Mills. That's a steal. And Mills has done more than Hardaway.

THJ did look better this year...at times. That's the best thing I can say about him. We didn't particularly need him, and I don't see him as a starter level player. I hope we move Lee and Melo with these moves. We can still tank with this guy

Did THJr get humbled by the D-League, work like hell on his game and improve? Yes.

Do I trust that he's a changed man and that he'll continue to be a changed man in NYC after getting paid? No.

THJr can certainly prove me wrong and I would admit that I'm wrong. If he comes here and shows that he's truly an elite scorer and shooter that can play some defense, and grab some boards and assists, then I will eat crow. I just don't trust him to actually do that. I'd much rather see that we hire a competent President, let him bring in his coach and let him make the moves he wants. To me, we are doing things backwards.

A player option to THjr is embarrassing. His boy band looking @ss doesn't deserve that kind of respect.

Hawks ain't matching. They'd be insane to put that much money into shooting guard.

So we had him in the first 2 years, and then he came back after a few years with Hawks. Maybe we can consider Hawks our "farming" team, who helps us develop a player and then we take him back a few years later.

Could we also then consider the Celtics a farming team? We send KP there for a few years in exchange for Jayson Tatum, next year's and 2019's first round picks... and then in 2021 when KP has become a true force (could post up, etc), we can throw a max at him? :D

Isiah Thomas: Jerome James

Donnie Walsh: Amare Stoudemire

Phil Jackson: Joakim Noah

Steve "Wind" Mills: Tim Hardaway Jr

Now, you watch. First 20 games, the Knicks will look good but wait, the rest of the league who works on their team chemistry and cohesion will come alive and the Knicks will slowly sink back into irrelevancy.

It'll be amusing reading the threads that go from defending Mills to pointing the weapon at another player.

If we turn Melo/Lee/Kyle into Harkless/Smart/TPE and a pick....I won't totally hate this deal.
But knowing us, Wily and/or D.Dot would end up getting shipped out too.

Every move this offseason has been geared toward a rebuild: trading Dwight Howard, letting Paul Millsap go, facilitating a sign-and-trade to land a future first-round pick and a young player in Diamond Stone, and hoarding cap space rather than signing veterans. Matching on this offer sheet would undo all of that work, zapping the Hawks’ financial flexibility in future years for a player not worth the money.

Hardaway’s projection from FiveThirtyEight landed him on a four-year deal worth about $33.5 million; this offer sheet is more than double that amount. Those projections are imperfect, but they’re a good ballpark estimation of a player’s value

Zerostatic wrote:A couple of thoughts:

1. The only free agents I want are either young guys with potential (25 is actually my cut off for this so Hardaway fits) or cheap experienced vets who can serve as mentors and promote a good culture. So this signing fullfills my criteria for the type of player I want.

2. This is a definite overpay... sorta. Please don't compare this to contracts signed last offseason (those were all inflated) or 1 year deals this year. However he is a restricted free agent so that is the only way to get the guy. If we offered him his market value (4 years 50 million) with no trade bonuses or player options, then Atlanta matches easily. I mean just go to their board, it was quite clear that their fans would've wanted a match on anything in the range of 4 year 50 million.

3. While I was super pumped watching Dotson today in summer league and am looking forward to see what kind of player he is. Let's be real here. If Dotson was a first team all-rookie selection we've be jumping for joy. You know who was first team all-rookie? Tim Hardaway Jr! And it's not like it was some fluke rookie season, THJ played his best ball last season.

4. The latest rumored Melo trade would fit in perfectly with this signing. It is a a 3 way with Melo going to Houston, Ryan Anderson going to Portland, and Mo Harkless and Myers Leonard coming to New York. Mo Harkless and Myers Leonard like Hardaway are young guys who are 25 or younger and who have shown some potential. Even if they're never anything more than role players they are solid and have probably not hit hit their peaks (which usually occurs around 27 or 28).

5. If Melo & Lee get traded, I can definitely see Hardaway putting up numbers similar to his 2nd half of the season with the Hawks. Perhaps slightly more scoring on slightly lower shooting percentages. He posted his improved numbers playing with Millsap, Schroder, Dwight Howard, and Kent Bazemore. Without Melo here, I'd say his role will probably be a bit larger (depending on who else signs).

6. As for wasting our cap space. I am done entertaining fantasies of having a ton of cap room and having a bunch of superstars sign here. So many teams have this fantasy every off season and then end up disappointed. We have destroyed any appeal for a veteran superstar to sign here. Not competitive, not up and coming, ruthless media coverage etc. We need to build through the draft and go after young guys who are still proving themselves.

Bottomline, if someone asked me earlier today if we should do this signing, I'd say no. However while there is definite potential (and in fact I'd say probable) that THJ's contract will become burdensome, there are also some positives in both THJ's growth as a player and future potential and also in that I don't see this as a departure from the go young and rebuild movement. Now, if we trade for 29 year old overpaid Ryan Anderson or trade any 1st round draft packs then I'd be singing a different story.
