Diaz velocity is down and Lindor isn't hitting, but it's spring, so maybe they're just taking it easy. Both are long-time vets.

As far as the kids go, Baty hit another homer today. He's got a pretty swing. The problem with him was a bad eye and hitting the ball into the ground too often. Mets have asked him to be more aggressive and at least in spring, it's been working.

With McNeil out a couple weeks, it looks like the 2nd base job is Baty's to start the year.

Read on Twitter

and in other news, Dom Smith opts out of his Yankee deal. He wasn't added to the 40 and didn't like his chances there.

6 days until real games start.

Mets are finalizing their OD roster.

Read on Twitter

Baty & Acuna makes sense. McNeil is only out a couple weeks and Baty clearly earned the job this spring (he earned 3rd base last spring too - so grain of salt), but he's earned a look. Acuna has struggled, but he's already on the 40 man roster and he's their best defender, and he can be a righty to Baty's lefty, so I understand the Acuna choice too.

Baty & McNeil are both lefty bats, which could be a little wierd when Jeff comes back. Ideally they'd like a righty 2nd baseman in the mix, if they had one. (Wingo, don't bring up Iglesias) . . .

Iggy would actually make sense if the roster wasn't filled up with players without options, or if they traded Jeff, or Jeff moves to the OF or something like that.

Senger surprises me a little. Supposed to be a solid give / no bat type at catcher, but I think the Mets aren't worried about putting him through waivers if he doesn't work out. They still have Reetz in AAA and Alvy should be back maybe mid-late May, possibly June.

They've made some pitching decisions too, but too many new names. I'm not up on the latest bullpen choices.

More on Heydan Senger, who works at whole foods during the off-season. He was a 24th round pick in 2018, probably a small signing bonus and minor league salaries are tiny.

For now, when he's on the roster he'll be making over $4,000 a day, plus major league meals, hotel rooms, people carrying his bags. Big change in lifestyle and a dream come true.

Maybe he could carve out a Tomas Nido / Juan Centeno like career out of this.

Nunez sent to AAA. He missed part of the spring for health reasons, so getting him 100% is reasonable, plus he's one of the few arms with options. If he stays healthy, he'll be back for sure.

Rule 5 pick Mike Vasil was waived by the Rays but picked up by the Whitesox. If they keep him on the 26 man, he's theirs, if he passes through waivers, we can get him back. The Whitesox are probably going to be lousy, so Vasil will probably be given a chance to start for them. I don't know whether to wish him luck or hope we get him back. Really. I think he might be a decent swingman between pen and starter. He's also still got options.

Lavender, our other player lost to rule 5 is starting the year on the Rays 60 day DL, so he won't be a decision for a while.

Holmes, Megill, Canning, Peterson & Senga will be the Mets initial starting 5 for the 27th-29th and 31st/1st. Blackburn will likely be the alternate should anyone struggles early.

Nunez is going to be a key arm in the pen this season I think he will be one of the better guys. The pen I think is going to be really good this season but they will have to make a move for a starter(Cease,Alcantra,Fedde) during the season go for it especially after bringing in Soto. Only team in the NL better(and prob baseball as a whole) is probably the dodgers. LFGM

But what about Canario? We need to keep him. He reminds me of Cespedes.

Neither Nimmo nor Marte have played the OF so far this spring. I’d would put Marte on the IL to start the season and let Canario DH with Winker. If he can show he belongs, then trade Marte for a minor league player to be named later.

He strikes out a ton. Still 24 and if he can make an adjustment, he's a keeper, but his K rate isn't sustainable. He's like Siri but without the magic glove.

I don't see how they can keep him right now. I don't think he passes through waivers, and I don't think it makes sense to carry that many outfielders if they try to keep him.

Who’s playing LF?

Never mind. Nimmo played LF against the Yankees yesterday. So Tryone Taylor will probably get to spell Nimmo some against lefties.

Canario made sense when they traded for him at the start of the spring, if Marte or Nimmo opened on the DL, or if they found a trade partner for Marte, but with 6 OFs on the roster (Soto, Nimmo, Siri, Taylor, Marte, Winker), there's no way to carry 7, even if the Mets like him, which I think they do.

I'm sure a team is going to snatch him off waivers. Maybe they can make a trade and get something, but players on waivers generally don't get a whole lot in return. The alternatives are to maybe trade Taylor or dump Marte's salary but those are big moves to keep an unknown who had a nice spring.

When players start to get healthy, the pitching could get crowded and maybe force a trade. I know that Megill has an option left. I'm not sure who else does. Pretty sure Nunez has an option left, so they can take their time with him. And I think Kranick, but they like Kranick and Nunez was nifty last year, so they may need to make some decisions. Manaea & Blackburn probably won't be out that long.

Rough game yesterday. Holmes was erratic and we had too many runners LOB. Just didn’t get the clutch hits when we needed them.
