They're bringing back the same team that got destroyed by the Heat, that was 7 games under .500 before Lin took over. Like Kidd, Camby, and Felton added to that roster is going to be good enough to make it a championship contender, especially with Shump out for months? Lin was their only chance and they're giving it away. They're giving it away.

WOW

Isn't that what what some of us said in the Kidd thread (minus that Lin nonsense).

Bringing Kidd to back up Lin has a whole different flavor than bringing him in to backup Felton.

Lin does not make or break this team. STAT and Melo does.
therefore the 8-16 record

Those numbers don's scare me and Dolan at all. Lin is a global phenomen and is worth every penny of said Luxury Tax. My pal Dolan will make triple that off of Lin before he has to pay a red cent.

They could also have preseason games in China, if they haven't already planned on doing that. There are ways of lessening the burden those numbers will have on his pockets.

Why the heck are people talking about CP3??? There is no f'in way we get CP3 by NOT matching Lin. UNRELATED! If you think they are related, please explain how.

THE KNICKS CANNOT GET CP3.

Even if he demanded to be traded to the Knicks, over-the-cap teams cannot sign and trade starting next offseason. Unless you think the Clippers are going to agree to trade Paul to the Knicks at the deadline for an injured Shumpert, Novak, Felton, Kidd, and Camby (the only way to make the math work) it's impossible. Which means it's impossible.

The only chance the Knicks have of CP3 is if they keep Lin, he becomes a superstar, and they trade him to the Clippers.

match lin and if he doesnt pan out you can move him.

I dont see why they shouldnt match him? this guy will be an international star playing here in NY.

From a basketball standpoint he's already better than felton

if you're giving up lin for nothing, i feel it will be a shot that will take us a while to recover from.

It makes no sense to give him up to houston and lose out on a 23 yr old pg who has potential, i jsut dont get it. If lin continues to play well, he may even match the dollar amount in the 3rd year. If dolan is about profits, he should sign lin, he must've seen how the Garden was banging when he was playing!

If people wanted support for the reason on not to match Lin those are two of them :dontknow:

1. That doesn't make sense unless we're assuming that Felton signing is contingent on Lin leaving. Otherwise, if Felton and Kidd turn out to be a good fit, you just stash Lin on the bench and worse comes to worse you dump him for an expiring in year 3.

2. By "now" you must mean three years. Lin would be in years 3-5 in that time period. If he does reach his potential, that'll be the time.

Actually, a lot of teams have 'made the jump' as a result of a young player blossoming. Celtics with Rondo, Spurs with Parker and Ginobilli, Lakers with Kobe. All of those teams were winning playoff series' before their young guy broke out. Thunder with Harden and Ibaka. You know why? Because you can't build a complete team by always acquiring players at the peak of their value. Miami is the exception, not the rule. Usually you need to take some gambles and hope they pay off. So the question is, 'who is our gamble that pays off'? Felton, even at his peak, is not going to push a team to the next level. Shumpert might, but if we ditch Lin were basically banking on him as the one risk that could pan out.

Does keeping Lin negatively affect our ability to sign players or make trades in the next three years? I'm currently of the belief that it does NOT. I think we are are pretty much set as a team for the next three years REGARDLESS of whether we match Lin or not; We are capped out regardless. If that's the case, I don't see why there is any debate over this, we would need to match Lin.

Does this push us from MLE to a MMLE? If not, then it looks like the only difference on the basketball court would be Lin or some guy off the street. If that's the choice how do you not choose Lin? At worse, if he sucks we trade him for a 2nd rounder or something. At best he helps us go for a championship. If he's something in between, he's a trade chip.

Off court stuff - if you complain about the luxury tax, you can't ignore the fact he'll bring extra attention and cash to the club; probably MUCH more than what the luxury tax would cost.

So basically can somebody explain to me basketball management wise, why we aren't bringing him back.

YAY! more sense!!!

Great game for the team. Makes me miss Shumpert so much, too.

gotta say, if the knicks let lin go, i'm gonna be rooting for him to fail.
(it's hard to 'fail' at 30 million, tho ;)

I'm not hating on Carmelo. He's one of my favorite Knicks. Never hated him even after this. I still hope this is a misquote.

But if Lin had made the comment about Carmelo's contract being ridiculous when Carmelo is a free agent,... you know Lin will get the wrath of Isola and Steven A Smith. Let's not be hypocrites.

those assumptions are based on Felton and Kidd are better than Lin at this stage of their career.

Actually it was reported that all they offered was a 1-year qualifying offer and told him to go prove his worth in the open market.

If you think the Knicks wouldn't have gladly signed Lin to the max they could offer and avoid the open market, you're crazy. Lin, as a smart Free Agent, was going to explore the open market no matter what. He was well aware he could get more than the Knicks could offer. If the Knicks did have that conversation, it was probably more like: You know what we can offer, if you can get more on the open market, go for it, but we intend to match anyway (although I'm sure they never expected quite the poison pill that was offered)

knicks82023 - you are wrong. They offered in the 1 year qualifying offer. That's it. No 2 year deal, no max deal.

Source confirms that while #Knicks remain highly concerned about Lin's third year ($14.9 million), remain likely to match Jeremy Lin offer.
