He could have made 99 million, instead he will make only 88 million since 2003. In 12 years he made 88 million dollars...let that sink in. You actually have to commend him for that. It shows he wants to win. Leave with 99+ million with no ring or leave with 88+, with a possible NBA ring.
After partying and taxes, and all the family and friends that ask him for money, leaving 12 mil on the table is pretty stupid. He's only in his mid-30s. He needs to plan for the future. I'm sure his family won't change their lifestyle after he retires, so he'll be spending loads of money his whole life. The more money he makes the better chance he and/or his family have of always being wealthy and healthy.
Plus, statistically speaking, the Spurs aren't even favorites to win. I don't think it's justifiable to leave that much money on the table. He'll be regretting that decision in 10-15 years.
He made his millions already. I can count many players who were ringless near the end of their careers to sign with a contender on the cheap for a chance to win a title before they retire. So obviously money isn't the only thing that some players care about. I really doubt he will regret that 11 million compared to him thinking "what if" he went to the spurs and won that title.
