I don't see what the Nets have to gain from planting stories like this. Are they hoping Melo gets fooled by reading all these stories and says, "Hmm...maybe I do want to go to NJ. After all, if everyone in the media says it, it must be true."

It creates momentum to keep the trade alive which at the very least will extract a higher price from the Knicks, if it works on Donnie that is (doubtful).

It also pressures Melo into at least accepting a meeting with them -- because they're putting pressure on Melo through Leon Rose. 'Your agent said you were open to playing for the Nets.' So publicly proclaiming that again and again is an attempt to hold them to their word.

But even if they've given up on getting him, and I don't think they have yet, it benefits the Nets to work with the Nuggets to make sure they get the best price they can from the Knicks.

The bolded point makes sense but as far as the Nets actually wanting Melo and thinking he's going to play there, give it up....

This isn't Steve Urkel going after Laura. This is Screech going after Lisa. Ain't happening buddy.

True. But the Nets may still hold out hope that the extension they're flashing will give Melo beer goggles just prior to the February deadline.

if you want to improve the perception of your franchise what sounds better, that melo refuses to meet with you or that you couldn't agree with denver on a deal.

LOL Hilarious. They've had the framework of a deal since September!!! Favors + expirings + 2 first round picks. This latest incarnation was apparently ready to go early last week. Are we really seriously thinking that after 5 months they cant figure it out? Come on now.

Well, I could see Stan wanting to dump more contracts. But I agree in principle that there is some BS going on here.

One of the problems is that I think the Nets may have said, 'If we wait till February 20, we could be so far out of the playoffs that it will hurt our chance to convince Melo.'

There is this push & pull between the Nets getting a worse pick for the Nuggets and the Nets thinking they need a chance at the playoffs this season to have a reasonable chance at swaying Melo.
