It appears that there are a lot of empty seats tonight. Maybe that was just for the prelims.

It really was a great prelim/early prelim. There were good fights. It was tough to watch Waterson go out like that, but her retirement adds to the moment. Then you've got Pyfer and Talbot who showed why their highly touted prospects.

Alex even appears to be too big for LHW. I wonder if moving up to HW is his next challenge?

I think it's coming soon. The last couple of LHWs that would be interesting for Alex (Ankalaev and Rakic) will straight-up try to wrestle. I think the UFC would rather get a big-money HW fight or two in before Periera deals with that.

Dana White has to be praying for a future where Jon Jones beats Stipe and calls out Poatan. Jones doesn't want to fight Aspinall out of spite, so a pivot to Pereira for legacy seems more and more like it could happen.

https://www.dazn.com/en-US/news/boxing/undercard-fights-announced-for-jake-paul-vs-mike-perry-event/1y1qwiyocxbxo1jweh5qbj2df6

On the card, MVP’s young phenom H2O Sylve (11-0, 9 KOs) will face top IBF and WBA-ranked Lucas “Prince” Bahdi (16-0, 14 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight battle of two of boxing’s top undefeated title contenders as the pair continue breaking the mold by putting their unmarred records on the line early in their careers. The “Fear No Man” card, presented by CELSIUS Live Fit Essential energy, will also feature the return of Mexican cruiserweight and former WBC world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (53-6-1, 34 KOs) vs. MMA star Uriah Hall (1-0 Boxing, 18-11, 14 KOs UFC).

Sylve vs. Bhadi and Chavez Jr. vs. Hall round out the five-fight Paul vs. Perry pay-per-view which includes Serrano vs. Morgan and Aguilar vs. Marksman. Leading into the Paul vs. Perry pay-per-view will be MVP’s super middleweight powerhouse Shadasia “The Sweet Terminator” Green (13-1, 11 KOs) as Green makes her first appearance of 2024 against Canada’s Natasha “The Nightmare” Spence (8-4-2, 6 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight bout. Young talent Angel Barrientes (11-1, 7 KOs) will face Puerto Rico’s Edwin Rodriguez (12-8-2, 5 KOs) over six rounds at super bantamweight.

Also on the card will be Amanda Serrano’s latest signee, 23-year-old Puerto Rican standout, three-time U.S. amateur national champion and high fashion model Alexis “Chop Chop” Chaparro (1-0, 1 KO), who thrilled in his professional debut in April 2024 and now will take on Kevin Hill (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round middleweight bout. Rounding out the card, Tampa boxer Ariel “The Golden Hulk” Perez (3-0, 2 KOs) will take on Dane Guerrero (0-0-1) in a 4 round light heavyweight fight.

Of the announcements, the standout for me is Uriah Hall facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr...because I'm an MMA stan. But that Sylve vs Bahdi fight is probably the real gem. More importantly though, at the bottom we've got Ariel Perez vs Dane Guerrero, and Dane's a good friend of mine. We interviewed him to help promote his pro debut last year.

the last time he fought jiri, a lot of people complained that it was an early stoppage. this is what happens when you let it go for a few seconds longer

Yep. People need to understand that it's better for a ref to err on the side of caution over letting things go and someone ends up being turned into a vegetable or worse.

Read on Twitter

I mean Poatan even stopped for a moment because dude was clearly in Lala land, and when the ref didn't step in he was like oh well guess I'll just bash his skull in

The sad part is after Herb Dean was announced as ref, everyone knew that the finish would include a few extra shots. Herb was a great ref for a while, but he's fallen off really badly.

Outside of a few years of wrestling, I've only dabbled in each of the arts enough to understand the technical bits better when I'm confused. But since I grew up around experts in a bunch of different styles, I've gotten to do some light work in Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, and Karate. While my brother and friends focused on the fight training, I was in basketball and soccer programs...ironically, the fight training might have been a better avenue because the guys that stuck with combat sports opened gyms and turned it into careers.

Meanwhile, I'm spending money trying to hang on to the last of my athleticism in a men's basketball league :nonono:

That's cool, I did boxing for a spell when I was younger because the guy who was my barber at the time opened a gym for kids to learn how to box and do positive stuff (my neighborhood was kinda rough so he was doing the lord's work), but other than that I went for basketball/baseball. Now? I lift full body 2x a week and I jog just to keep myself from going to sh*t  it's so so easy to fall off

The lives of the fighters are in his hands, I think stuff like that is inexcusable for a ref. The guy was clearly cooked

Speaking of refs nearly getting guys killed, there's a clip going around of a BJJ ref who doesn't realize a fighter in asleep in a triangle choke. His opponent transitions to an arm bar and has to snap the arm before the ref does anything. It's too graphic to warrant posting, but it really shows how important refs are and how easily things can get dangerous.

Break week for the UFC. Next week we get a Rose Namajunas fight and one of the Bonfim Bros.

But the big fights of the weekend are for boxing. Shakur Stevenson is rocking, and for the MMA fans, it's finally time for Masvidal vs Diaz in a boxing ring...I'll be skipping that.

That fight was so bad that Shakur got booed last night in front of his hometown crowd. I was just glad it was on free TV. I would never pay to watch him box on PPV.

It's not that Shakur is a bad fighter, he isn't, at all. His ring IQ is top notch. But goddamn, his style isn't conducive to entertainment. People thought that Floyd was boring, but he knew how to keep the crowd going.

It's sad because technical mastery should be lauded, but for a sport that is clamoring for the next big thing, that style isn't gonna get people to shell out $70-100 for a PPV

I'm not sure. He's a Newark kid though. He's super-talented, but I feel like he never puts his foot on the gas. He pitched a shutout last night, and still got boo'ed at home.

I'm actually hearing Diaz vs Masvidal was good too, btw. People are debating the decision and everything

Yeah, he's almost disciplined to a fault. He doesn't have that instinct to steamroll guys that most stars do. But the funny thing is, I think he gives almost EVERYONE problems, but it's gonna take the opponent to make the fights fun.

Nah Shakur isn't related to Teofila, Teofila was Afro-Cuban, Shakur is from a Muslim American family out in Newark, he got trained by his grandpops Wali.

Shakur literally boxed a perfect fight.....but fans wanna see brutal knock outs  it's kinda rough because on one hand I get it, but his style is his style and it wins fights.

I think I've seen Shakur go for the kill like twice in his pro career. It just isn't his style to take massive risks to put someone down.

Again, the style is the style and the objective is to win by any means necessary within the rules. But man. I was barely hanging on once we got past round 6.
