Wooooo, lowball him. Payback's a bitch.

Payback? What are you saying?

I have no idea.

Melo twice has said he'd take less & Phil just said Melo discussed taking less.

People really are letting their Phil Jax love get the best of them.

I think payback for Melo holding the Knicks hostage (atleast according to Rasho)

He didn't just open the door to not retaining Melo if he's not down with the Knicks' terms. He opened the door, jammed his foot in, bolted it to the opposite wall, and plastered "My way or the highway" signs all over it.

He does want Melo but it is no longer "integral to the strategy."

By Phil's own admission, it doesn't seem that confrontational

Melo even said before Phil got here that he is willing to take a paycut. He brought it up first. I don't see why people are thinking the Phil is going to Zen him into taking less. He would take a paycut willingly if management shows him a plan for a ring.

you want melo to take less because it helps the team get other players. any other reason is kind of weird.

I know Lambieer is coaching the Liberty, if there was one guy I'd want coaching this team it be him. I saw that 30/30 on the Pistons he put everybody in there place and told what their roles was going to be and if they didn't buy in they needed to GTFO

It would be terrific if Jackson can convince Laimbeer to join his staff so he can work with guys like Stoudemire and Bargnani.
lambieer would be an asset...Kmart would be bodyslamming players...

People are dubious about Melo taking less for the good of the team because he's been so adamant about opting out.

Yeah this is not about anybody sticking anything to Melo. He wants to be a Knick, or at least he did, and he wants to win.

Phil is, however, pointedly raising it again in public. But that's not to get into it with Melo or pull rank -- it's to start negotiating with him. Phil represents the Knicks and Melo represents Melo. It's a negotiation. Phil is putting down a marker.

And Phil knows that in this case, it's not about saving money so much as it is about building a great team. And that's something Melo says he wants too. Phil is not going to shy away from holding Melo to it. That's all there really is here.

Brooklyn_Yards wrote:Idk about that. Linsanity saved Pringles but after that month his job status was in limbo. Dolan talked to the team after their terrible start and told them Woody was here to stay, that they'd have to shape up. With Pringles it was a matter of when, even though he resigned I doubt he would've been coach past that day.

No coach should be let off the hook. Part of the job description is to motivate. I'd argue that promising Woody the rest of this season was a mistake and NOT promising D'antoni more time than he deserved was the RIGHT move. In either case, the Knicks didn't fire D'antoni and he resigned; so I think it's unfair to say they treated the situation wrong.

Meh, I think the Knicks handled both situations wrong. Neither coach should've been retained Pringles after (2010-11) or Woody after (2011-12). We have the Zen master now so it turned out pretty well for us.

Phil has to have several plans and scenarios that could play out in the next couple of years. Even if Phil absolutely doesn't want Melo to leave, why would he publically state that he would resign Melo at any cost?

This is like poker, you don't want to show your hand. If other teams see that Phil wants to keep Melo, and then Melo still wants to leave, they'd throw every low-ball offer at us because we would be desperate, like we were when we first got him.

Phil doesn't want that to happen and is "okay" with keeping him or not.

Which is strange because opting out is the only way he can take less. Opting in means he would get paid more next year not less.

because he wants the guaranteed years. if he opts in at a good salary it will be no different for us. his cap hold is greater then his contract so he was always gonna have to sign before anyone else.

I'll grant you that.

The discussion I was referencing wasn't "who is who's daddy though." The discussion was whether Mr. Jackson's earlier comments meant they were in on Melo at all costs. He does want Melo on HIS team.

You may forget - I actually like Melo. But my position is that NO player should ever have the kind of power that he did in this org.
