Like, don't get me wrong, they're still really good and I'd probably rather have Tatum/Brown than Randle/RJ (okay, I would but I'm a homer), and making the ECF 3 times in 4 years is a level of success I'd kill for, but it feels like they wasted a lot of chances to put themselves over the top
I mean, between 2012 and 2020, they averaged 2 first round picks a year (18 firsts in 9 years), and while they didn't use all of them and most were late firsts (only 5 were lottery picks), it feels like they don't have much outside Tatum/Brown in terms of young talent
And that's the issue is, you kind of need to hit on your late firsts to produce quality role players for cheap, and they really haven't done that. I'll give them Robert Williams and Payton Pritchard, and I'm still high on Nesmith, but while that's okay, I feel like they should have more, if that makes sense
I think in terms of top-end young talent, they beat us just due to Tatum alone (and I'm higher on RJ than most), but I feel like our prospect pool is deeper, if that makes sense. Which still puts them in a better situation than us, cause quality > quantity in the NBA, but I think they're headed towards unfilled potential along with the Wolves and Sixers. Which is kinda funny to me, cause if you went back to 2017 and said that in 5 years the Nets would be seen as championship favorites above the Sixers and Celtics, and the Wolves would still be a lottery team, nobody would believe you. Except maybe about the Wolves, but people were really high on KAT/Wiggins/LaVine in 2017, all 21 years old, all scoring over 19 a game
Just funny how life works out, you know?
Feels like they are always waiting and saving up for that homerun/superstar move but can never pull it off.
no that's the knicks. the celtics have pulled that off several times in my lifetime and they're just temporarily down the past couple years because kyrie is nuts and they couldn't convince AD to come there and kemba didn't work out
They last pulled that off 15 years ago or so, and it worked. More recently in the last 10 years they have been trying for that same homerun move and havent been able to pull it off.
Of course the Knicks have failed much worse
