Rosseta Stone is garbage. I feel sorry for who ever gets fooled into paying for that. Its a video game. Repetition. You match keywords to picture but never learn the structure of how to use the language. And after while you memorize the photos and the phrases attached to them.

Thats for kids. I tried it to brush up my spanish and become more fluent. And im pissed off. I get answers wrong sometimes because I cant even figure out the photo, but I KNOW what is being said. That whole **** about it being a old FBI tool has got to be a flat out lie. Thats for kids. Its a game.

Especially for spanish where its so important to learn how to use verb attachments and pronouns. It never teaches you anything. Just a statement and the same old photos. Its multiple choice. And a few of the choices are so far out there you dont have to think about it.

For example, in spanish when speaking to close friends and family members the words change. You use Tu instead of usted. You add a "s" at the end of words (well they do we dont) like estas instead of esta. The program never teaches you. You would sit there scratching your head wondering why they are using different words. Or worse just let it go and never learn.

Dont fall into the keyword trap. Its easy to ignore grammar on rosseta stone and just match the key word you recognize with the photo. Like "el neno tene una manzana pero no come". You then see 4 photos. A old man with coffe. A woman with a salad. A little girl with a ball. A little boy with a apple. You dont need to know what was actually said in the statement to get the answer right. So make sure you take the time to study the statement and dont fall into the video game they make the program out to be.

So what's the best way of learning a new language?

Micheal Thomas audio books are pretty dam good.

I have heard great things about tell me more software and want to try it out.

For japanese I just did a quick look up. Rocket Japanese is the highest rated software. Rosseta ston is 5th.

Maybe it works for someone else or a different language. But just being honest, I think its trash. And for the price they charge its a insult. Its a glorified video game. Its kids play to me. It does not teach you anything. They say its designed to teach you the way you learned you first language. What is one of the first words you learn after mama dada? Why. You ask why and get a answer. Rosseta Stone is one big guessing game. But the answers are easy. You gain a false sense of achievement.

Im glad someone brought this up. I have been dying to bitch about this program. IMO its right on the border of a scam. If I didnt already have a understand of spanish from home this program would just teach me a bunch of single words and useless phrases but never showing me how to USE the language.

Well Miichael Thomas seems to be the cheapest one so if it has that much bang for it's buck it must be legit.

He has a unorthodox teaching method. And he explains the structure of the language. He shows you ways to transform you vocabulary first. So right off the jump you know hundreds of words off the first 10 minutes. Then he goes into the structure of how the verbs attachments work in spanish. And before you know it your putting entire sentences together. But not non sense. Not travel lingo. You can express yourself a bit.

The problem with those learning tools is they dont teach you how to understand a response. So you MUST learn how to USE the language. And rosseta stone does not do that. You can learn how to say welcome to my hotel. And where is the apples. But what happens when you get a response and you dont know how the laungauge works?

For me its hard anyway because our spanish is different from all that stuff anyway. Plus mine is even more broke up with that new yorican talk. They teach proper ass mexican talk. And thats fine because I know enough to transform what I learn. Plus I DO want to be fluent and proper. Just gets to me that mexican is the american standard of spanish. We are all different.

Thats for japanese. I just looked on another site and RS came in 2nd. Maybe it works for him. I dont know. For me and for spanish its junk. I got to waste time trying to figure out what the dude in the photo is doing. Would have been good for the kids when they were small to learn english and proper spanish. Because at least you are in school and can ask a teacher WHY

Rosetta Stone finished installing. I see what you're saying kane, and I agree that's what I heard about it. I'm going to get started in a bit and see how it goes.
