Fournier/Cam/IQ/3 unprotected/2 swaps/mavs pick/pistons pick or wiz pick
Then trade Randle and rose for rw and buy him out
That puts the Knicks about 6m into the luxury tax and with a team of
Brunson
Mitchell
Barrett
Toppin
Robinson
bench
Grimes
McBride
Hartenstein
Sims
and a single 5m exception and a pick every other year.
This is really not a good team
It's why you hold onto Fournier, Randle, one of IQ and Grimes, and Obi if you can, but not absolutely, especially if Obi out means retaining IQ AND Grimes.
Then, you have:
Brunson/IQ
Mitchell/Fournier
RJ/?
Randle/Obi
Big Mitch/Hartenstein
And then have the following players to deal if trades can be made: Randle/Fournier/Big Mitch/RJ/Obi/IQ
Or, in the Grimes stays and IQ goes out with Rose (hurts backup PG a bit)
Brunson/?
Mitchell/Grimes
RJ/Fournier
Randle/Obi
Big Mitch/Hartenstein
And then have the following players to deal if trades can be made: Randle/Fournier/Big Mitch/RJ/Obi/Grimes
And finally, the Rose/Cam/Obi is the outgoing
Brunson/IQ
Mitchell/Grimes
RJ/Fournier
Randle/Paschall
Big Mitch/Hartenstein
And then have the following players to deal if trades can be made: Randle/Fournier/Big Mitch/RJ/Grimes/IQ/Paschall
Honestly, I think best trade in terms of having the best team and most future flexibility is to deal Rose, Obi, Cam - if Jazz will take that trade and not ask for every last pick the Knicks can legally trade.
They'll have 7 players making 28, 25 (if RJ extended), 17, 14, 8 (if RJ not extended), 2.7, 2.7, whatever the MLE is that Paschall signs for.
Pretty good range of salaries, talent, skills to trade somewhere. Meaning, better flexibility to upgrade.
I want the Knicks to retain Obi. I like Rose. Fournier has his issues. I'd rather surround Brunson and Mitch with shooting in the rotation, and have more pieces to trade later. Also, while Obi is good and Randle's attitude is a legit concern, I think it's easiest to replace Obi's 17 mpg of backup PF production, especially if the Knicks insist on keeping Randle.
To me, this the trade to make once you remove emotion or attachment to certain players.
